I got my 160gig HD last week and its still in the box...Im afraid to put it in myslef, I mught be break something and also, I never can get the jumpers right....help greatly apreciated.

I know how you feel. 1 day my DVD ROM Drive broke, so I tried to go in and "fix" it by taking the drive out.
Instead, I fried the motherboard, making the system unuseable. Had to get a new system, and vowed to NEVER touch the inside of a computer again.

Its really simple to do, I know its worrying the first time, but trust me, you'll get over it. Harddrive upgrades are also the easiest upgrade you can do, just about.

Start by taking the side off your case. You should now touch the metal of the interior or the case (Not a plastic outside bit). This will remove all the static electricity from your body. Static can build back up from your clothes, so touch the case again every so often. If you have an anti-static wrist band, you can use that instead.

You don't say if this is a replacement drive or a secondary, so I'll explain both. To install it as the only drive, gently pull the IDE or sata cable out of the rear of the drive, as well as the power lead. Then simply unscrew the screws holding in the drive and slide it out. At this point, make sure your jumpers are set. You will have 3 options, master, slave, and cable select. There may be a picture describing this on the drive itself, if not, look in the manual. Set the jumper to cable select. Then, slide the new drive into the old ones place and screw it back in. Reinsert the ide/sata cable, then the power lead. Note, if you are upgrading from an IDE to a SATA drive, remove the IDE cable from the motherboard, and connect the supplied SATA lead to the motherboards connector. Once done, put the case back on, turn your Pc on, put your windows CD in and restart the PC. If all has gone well, the windows installer should load.

If this is simply a secondary drive, its even easier. First, set the jumper to cable select (Again, either look for a diag on the drive itself, or look in the manual), open your PC and slide the drive into a spare bay. Screw it in place. If its IDE, connect the spare connector on the ribbon running to your master drive to the drive. If its SATA, it will be a seperate lead to its own connector on the motherboard. Then connect a power connector. Close the case and boot up.
Once in windows, right click on "My Computer" and select "manage". In the new window, click on "Disk Management" in the left window. Check your new drive is showing up. If it needs it, re-format it, reboot and you should now have a working secondary hard drive.

If you get stuck, post what problems/errors your get on here and we will help. And remember, don't worry, the first time you take the lid of is scary, but as long as you free yourself of static and don't spill any drinks in there, you'll be fine :D

ok...thx for the help,Im going to put it in now wish me luck :(

Good luck man. :)
1 thing I don't get though. You say to touch something metal inside of the system before anything else.
Wouldn't that shock the system? What metal part should you touch to prevent frying the system?

If it won't go in, put about a can and half of Vaseline on HD, rub it gently until HD is soaked with Vaseline........Never mind. I thought you were asking about your ATM Machine Card. Just do what Link told you and you'll be fine.

Good Luck.

unalocated? wtf is that?
Your HD should have come with an installation CD and a diagram showing how to set the jumpers.

Run the installation CD and you are done, provided you did it right.

no, it came in a box, no CD with it.
there are some pictures. in the HD,Im so confused :(

help !!!!!!!!!! D:

try putting the jumper as cs (cable select) that may work. Instead of just having it as a master or a slave

well, I gave up on it for now....I saw that on the HD as well thoe, what does that mean "cable select?

After HDD is installed and Windows is booted, go to My Computer and see if HDD is reported, if its displayed there as drive D or F or Etceteras, you're in good shape, right-click it and format it. In the format option, don't mark and select anything. if you can't see there, lemme know I have another trick for you.
To set the jumpers to cable select remove all jumpers from both HDDs.

If Windows doesn't boot then you have your HDD set wrong.

Lemme know I'll wait for you here...And hurry up, I'm hungry.

Good Luck.

It just means that it will pretty much automatically select it to the type of drive (it being slave in this case)

I know your thinking "why not jsut put the jumper in slave then?" But ive had problems with hardrives and cable select has fixed the problem.

so give that a shot

sounds like you dont have to do anything with the cables
just go to disk management and format the drive.
then it should work.

there was no option for FORMAT..I think..anway,I,ll just set down and try it again tonight.

lolz you HAVE to format it in order for it to be usable. See what your current HD is formatted to (Fat32, NTFS probably), then do it up. post a screenshot of your disk management so we can better assist you.

Here is an attachment of what disk management looks like.

You need to initialise the drive. Go to Administrative Tools in Control Panel, then Computer Management. In the navigation bar on the left click Disk Management. You new drive should show in the list, left click it and click Initialise. Then it can be formatted.

very nice first post spoon!

and welcome to the hl2 community

Thanks :) now I hope he tries it, and it works! As far as I know, any hard drives added to Windows after installation need to be initialised to be seen by the OS.

Have you partitioned the drive yet? After you partition it then you can format it with NTFS (perfered) or FAT32.

If mr spoon's advice with initialise does not work then try this:

Go to the manufactures website and download a utilities program.
Seagate
Maxtor Try maxblast4 here.
WesternDigital

Although what I have done in the past is Boot to my Windows XP CD and follow through as if I am going to install new. After I finish the Partition part I exit and take out the CD. Restart into my normal Windows XP that is already installed and the new HDD is shown and given a drive letter. Then I format the new HDD within Windows XP.
