Are they rating these with full AA, AF and everything on high or?

And this to me seems like no big woop... i mean the only noticable diffrence to me here is that the "gamma" in the water in the dx9 photo is much higher ...

There's not a HUGE difference between DX8 and DX9 in HL2. You will, however, get to see a lot more small pretty effects when using a DX9 card that you can't see in these screenshots (watch the DX9 tech demo, and take a look at some of the pretty effects being shown off -- you won't have those with DX8 hardware).

The game will still look nice with DX8, all you miss out on is little stuff that makes the game look extra cool.

you can't really use those shots, they don't show any of the cool effects. It would be better to compare the New DX9 video with say....the barricade video

i agree that tech demo looks stunning... wish i had a 9800 pro

those are terrible shots chosen for comparison. Staring into a wall isn't going to show much of a difference on different renders.
