I have vsync on and my monitor refresh rate at 85. And I'm getting some pretty noticable screen tearing when I play HL2 based games. I Don't notice it so much in other games. I have dual 7800GTX's.

First off, you're crazy. (Dual 7800GTX? You can buy a house with that :/)

Second, I heard that screen tearing has something to do with vsync. Try taking it off.

no lol turn vsync on its tearing because the fps is going over your monitors refresh rate and vsync makes it so the fps will state under or at the monitors refresh rate

I tried on and off and I don't notice a big difference other than I get a way higher frame rate with it off.

Is it kinda inevitable to get a little screen tearing?

It odd because when I using a intel pentium 4, 2.8ghz, with a GeForce 6800gt I seemed to have less tearing, But maybe not. :rolling:

Can you describe the tearing? If you say VSync is on, only other thing might be an overheating problem with your card(s)

Well, I only say this because the fan on my 9800 is kind of wearing out or something and it's causing artifacts on video type stuff... I just ordered some Rev3 Arctic Cooling.

That's probably not the problem... Probably.

No. they are not overheating. I wouldn't call them artifacts but if you move your mouse you can notice little splits in the screen while the game is drawing the scene. make sense?

Yes, I know what you are saying. I'm suprised Vsync didn't fix it. Try some different resolutions and refresh rates maybe?

Try put this into the startup commands (ie right click hl2>properties>launch options).

-refresh 85

Then, in the console, try input:

fps_max 85

See if that helps.

You can play around with higher and lower settings (for the last one. Don't touch the first. Could bork your monitor) to try and find a nice middle ground between responsive gameplay and minimum tearing.

make sure vsync is on in both your vid card settings AND ingame.

Well Giant, Tweedy may be right.
Maybe HL2 is having Vsync problems because of the SLI or something. Possibly turning it on in vid settings would fully fix it.
I dun know but worth a shot.

Yeah... I just disabled sli and it ran wonderfully

That would be because if the SLi mode your using. Basically, each card does a half of the screen, so they obviously wern't quite in sync. Try enabling it again in a different mode and see what happens.

I assume your on Split Frame Rendering (SFR), try switching to Alternate Frame Rendering (AFR), see if that helps

i think he has dual 7800GTX's.

so the screen tearing may be due to syncronisation going wrong between the two cards:

OR!!!

im talking crap again.

edit: i think u said its sorted now anyway. yeah its the SLI thing. do u even need 2 of those cards?? its just HL2!!!!
