I'm getting Vista thursday!!!! 1/11/07

One of my coworkers just told me he got a copy of vista in the mail from Mexico and hes giving it to me for FREE!!! He doesnt know what package it is yet but i will know in a couple of days. YESS!!!! :)
 
Surely someone of your wealth can afford your own copy?
 
I guess that proves that money and brains really do have nothing to do with each other...
 
lol its kinda funny when i google imaged the computer in alans profile i found the exact same picture linked to someone elses website. i also find it ironic that everything good in the world seems to happen to alan. my point i think is...

edit: o nvm lol that was from that site where you watch all the videos and you get a free version. i could have done it then and i went to do it later, but it was sold out.

WhiteZero: I got the same thing but for Microsoft Office 2007... I can't wait :)

I'm sure it's real. Microsoft is really wanting to get Vista and Office 2007 out into the marketplace! Giving it away for free is the best way to do that.

Alan have fun :) Your computer should do it proud. Hopefully you get Ultimate.
 
Iced, what are the main differences between Ultimate and Business? Because the charts on the MS Vista page are really vague...

No shit, sherlock. Even the chart says that. What else does it not include? I don't care for hooking anything up to my TV, or my non-existent 360.
 
The Business version does not include Parental Controls, BitLocker Drive Encryption, or any of the Media Center functionality (including using your Xbox360 as an extender)... It also doesn't come with Movie Maker or DVD Maker.

You basically lose some of the functionality that home users would use for media and such.

If anybody has the choice and don't want to go Ultimate, go for Home Premium! It's the best version. Whatever you do, don't go for Home Basic. It's almost too crippled since they are making it for the real real cheap bastards.

Premium over Business?
 
Yes that is what I would do.

Here is the order I would get Vista...

Ultimate -> Home Premium -> Business

Home Premium has all of the great media capabilities and lots of neat programs like DVD Maker which is sweet. Ultimate is on there simply because it has all of the features possible and Ultimate Extras on top of that. If you don't have the cash, don't fret too much about Ultimate... It's more a bunch of niceties than essentials. Well, unless you can't live without BitLocker Drive Encryption.
 
yar...home premium for me, too, once it's released here on the 30th of january :D. i am still not sure whether any of the versions will come with both 64 and 32bit on one disc. i know for sure the system builder versions only have one version.

oem could come with both, but im for sure all retail packages will come with 32 and 64bit.
 
Do OEM versions come with cd-keys? they're sooo much cheaper than the boxed copy :D
 
I thought that with the retail versions you were allowed to transfer the copy of vista from one pc to another once, whilst with oem you are only allowed hardware upgrades, and no transfer.. It's all so very confusing !
 
The question is, how long will it take the community to put all of Ultimate's features into lower versions. ;)
 
Good luck with that since you have to fool all of the installers, dll's, files, etc that you are running on Ultimate.

It will probably happen eventually.

Ah, so there may be a good reason to go retail and pay full price? Chances are i'll be changing motherboards and upgrading abit...

Also, is it worth getting 64bit? Or are there problems with drivers etc still? 64bit still runs 32bit programs etc right?
 
seeing that i will get 2 gigs of ram soon and in 2 years, maybe 3 years upgrade to 4 gigs or higher, chances are good that 64 bit will be useful.

32bit can only address 4 gigs of ram, minus about 512mb of it for addressing the rest of the hardware you get support of about 3.5 gigs of ram.

i guess that in 3-4 years 4-5 gigs are standard and vista will be around for another 6-8 years until a new OS hits the shelfes. so yes, in a reasonable amount of time 64 bit will be useful. i certainly wont buy 32 bit now and shell out another 100-300 bucks again for the same shit in 64 bit in 2 years.

Well, assuming that retail versions allow 1 tranfer between different systems and oem versions do not, then it would be worth going retail. However i am still not entirely clear as to whether this is the case or not ! The retail version comes with 32 bit and 64 bit in the same package. So say you were to install the 32 bit version for the time being, and wait for 64 bit programs to become more common, then you could then install the 64 bit version when you wanted to.

Tbh i think i'm going to wait until a few people have gotten it and i finally understand clearly the differences between the oem and retail versions. Because tbh, 350 for vista ultimate retail is daylight robbery !
