Yep. Title says it all. I'm looking for something sub $400 that can be used for just screwing around and taking photos and video with friends. Any suggestions?
Whats more important? Video or photos. Digital camcorders take crappy ass photos. Especially for under 400 bucks. If you get a digital camera you get sweet stills, and crappy video.
If you want a Digital camera more, with a video mode. I suggest the Cannon Powershot S2-IS. I would be jealous. If I had 200 more bucks than I did I would have bought it. Its got a 640X480 video mode with sound (i think... may want to check on that) with a 12X optical zoom. The zoom is as good or better than some digital camcorders. The resolution is not bad if you plan on viewing the video on tv. It takes photos at 5 megapixels, and has image stablization on both still and video recordings.
If you want a camcorder more, photo quality will suffer quite a bit. Resolutions usually dont go higher than 2 or 3 megapixels... and thats on expensive camcorders. Also, you should look into what types of media you want. Some use MiniDV which are tiny tapes. Some use DVDs, and some have hard drives. I think in your price range you wont be able to get a HDD one. Probably not even a dvd. I know that most camcorders also come with memory card slots... but I dont know if they record video on them or just still images. If they do record video, you will probably need to spend quite a bit on getting big memory cards if you choose to record that way.
