Since I now have high-speed I have decided to start pre-loading HL2 files. Problem is whenever I click the button to start Steam just has an error and freezes. So I right click on the task bar to close it and I get the usual application isn't responding message, would you like to close it.

So I close it and start Steam again and nothing happens. Restarting my computer hasn't done anything, disabling my firewall hasn't done anything either.

I am using XP Pro (SP2), basically a brand new computer with Trend Microsystems Internet security for Anti-virus.

Does anyone know if there is an easy fix aside from reinstalling Steam?

I was getting this too. I cancled the preload and restarted it several times and got 'servers too busy'. It's goning now so you'll just have to wait and keep trying to restart it.

No I don't even get a message saying the servers are too busy, Steam just freezes.

Also I have been trying this once in awhile over the past 3 days so I don't think the servers were busy all that time.

tried turning off anti virus and firewall for a second to see if it runs?if it works then try and adjust the settings on them to stop it interfering.

Now you have high speed, my advice is this. Turn on steam and at the point you think its frozen, bugger off for half an hour, just to be sure its not updating that is making it seem frozen. Try installing statbar from www.statbar.nl (just hit downloads. Its freeware and theres no spyware or adware or anything) and set it up to show network usage. This will let you know if steam is downloading.

Failing that, un-install steam, reinstall the most basic version (The one without any included games or mods) and then set all the games you want to use to auto-update. That done, select HL2 from "coming soon", load the pre-load and bring up the steam monitior. Go have a cup of tea, come back and check its all going as it should (Look at the monitor) and then go to bed. Come morning, all will be nicely up to date.

Hope that helps :)

Well I tried reinstalling, it still does the same thing. Stat-bar indicates no bandwidth is being used either.

For pre-loading does Steam use something like Bittorant or some sort of file sharing components? Because if it does then I can see why it keeps screwing up. My university service provider has done something to prevent most kinds of file-sharing or bittorants, so it could be that. ;(

That would be port blocking I assume. To find out, download zonealarm (Or the firewall of your choise) and try to update with it running. Zone alarm will block it and tell you what port it was trying to use. Then pop down to your friendly tech (Assuming you are allowed to be doing this in the first place) and find out if its blocked. If it is, politley ask if they could un-block it for you.

Or if your feeling lazy, wait for a reply to this post

Good luck mate.

Well I woke up this morning and before comming on here I decided to try it one last time and for some reason it just started working. Its going extremelly slow right now but it is working.

I didn't try zone alarm or anything so I really have no clue why it wasn't working before. Thanks for the help though everyone. :)

Good for you :) I guess it was just one of those periods where Windows gets cranky and desides that a specific application will freeze. Sometimes I think windows can be like that. The first OS with AI.
