I'm sure there is a simple solution ...

First off, forgive my noobishness at hammer. I've been playing with this for a couple of days, and I've been able to make some rooms, put basic light entitys in places, and even have some set to flicker. The problem is, even though some of my rooms are rather dark, and I can see light flickering off the wall ... my weapon shows no effects on it. Even in the dark it just remails as if I was in a flat lit room. How can I make it so my gun, hand, etc react with the surrounding light?
 
Possibly add some cubemaps? I'm a n00b myself but i'd try that if I were you. :)
 
I'm not sure if source engine supports this at the moment, doom3 would tho. Just to make sure, turn the brightness of your flickering light up nice and high and move around to make sure you are in the right spot. If it still doesn't work then I'm afraid it is likely an engine limitation.
