Images look washed out in my monitor.

Okay I have this 17" flat CRT monitor (LG) and its about 2 1/2 years old. I recently started noticing that the whole screen looks washed out, in the sense the colors, contrast everything is too watery. I checked the monitor settings, video settings etc to see if the Gamma settings or anything was changed but they were set to default.

I think most probably the thing is snuffing out... but do any of you guys have an alternative view of my problem? If you do then do you know a way to fix it?

I've had CRT monitors that last 25 years, and they still work if you punch them repeatedly, to convince them they should still work.


Make sure the plug is in tight, and the screws are tight.


It should last much longer. Do you use it at like 120 Hz refresh or something? The higher the refresh rate you use, the faster it will die.

This is a long shot, but you could check your video card settings. disable anti-aliasing, anistropic filter.

You could try disabling your video card, and use the onboard, just to see if there is any change.

do you use Ati tray tools?

Sounds like it is getting old, but like Virus said 2 1/2 years isn't very long.

Meh, I'd probably just adjust the Monitor settings to make it look right again and see if it continues to degrade.

Well there's your problem right there..
Every single person I know that has bought something LG, whether it's a monitor, DVD writer, CD player you name it, it has inevitably broken down within a maximum of 3 months. So my advice is to replace it with a better monitor.

I myself only recently have replaced my old monitor, it was an old Sony monitor that I had since 1997 and it worked fine!

And I do use ATI tray tools. Can that be a problem?

Yeah I know LG is a bad choice. But I was in a hurry since my last monitor (Phillips) conked out and I needed a new one real quick. I didn't look too hard.

I was thinking about that myself. But LCD's conk out faster than CRT's don't they? I've been having rotten luck with monitors. They keep dieing on me!

When getting a new monitor, read some reviews and comparisons.

I recommend Samsung or Panasonic, but there are others that are good too.

My favorite is Samsung. I have a Samsung 955DF CRT that looks better - or at least as good as anything I've ever seen. My brother has twin Samsung Wide screen LCD's that - for the first time, made me think that maybe LCD was better than CRT. Amazing picture.

The monitor that lasted 25 years was Panasonic.

I could have told you to avoid Philips and Magnovox - Although I got a magnovox from my brother that is pretty good, so maybe they have come around. Sanyo is another brand I would have said to avoid, but I'm not sure anymore, they seem to have gotten much better quality in the last 10 years or so.

I've had a Sony and Mag brand monitors that had an absolutely horrible picture clarity, so make sure you read reviews. Don't just judge something by brand, check reviews of the specific model number, and take into consideration what the reviewer is comparing it to.

I would also avoid OEM brands like HP/Compaq, etc. I don't think they are bad quality, but they tend to be manufacturered with keeping the price as low as possible in mind. Therefore, they may not have a flat screen, perfect pixels, and/or they may be lacking in size and features.

I have a few monitors for sale, but you will have to pick up, or pay shipping.

a never used, pretty damn nice, but a little small emachines 17" flat screen CRT (came w/my computer), and a couple old crappy 15" monitors

sell them for like $15-$65 each

But before you go buy another monitor, do you have a backup monitor you can try? Make sure it's the monitor that is bad, and not your video card or a bad driver.

I'd recommend and Eizo, but they aren't really for the average joe. Buy a Samsung and you'll be lovely.

Hey Virus, that looks a good offer but there is going to be some issues on warranty and stuff like that... so I'll pass. And of course i'll be buying a LCD next time most probably. Does Panasonic still make monitors? I thought they closed down or got acquired or something.

the NEC 22" diamondtron is probably one of the better crts ever made ..cant go wrong for $189 can

also lcd and crts each have their uses ...fixed resolution can be problematic if you dont have the latest graphics cards ..especially in higher resolutions/larger screens ...get what you like and dont listen to marketing hype ..there's no standardization in the lcd business they pretty much write their own specs that may or may not be entirely accurate
