The amount of these trojans on various forums is starting to get scary (there are no warning stickies or anything) so I just had to make a thread of these as a little warning (so I can sleep in peace :S) Spread the word(the warning)!
A HL2 modification will never need a separate executable. 'Proper' Mods are meant to be run with the default hl2.exe with a command line parameter (shortcut with the parameters or with Steam's launch options).
Example: "G:\Steam\blah\Hl2\hl2.exe" -game mpmod
(OR the mod might put the default hl2.exe in it's own folder like CS:S does or something, don't know yet that well how HL2 handles it ) or something like that no weird .exes anyway.
About the "dm mod": apparently anyone can apply the so called "dm mod" with less than 10 console commands so the downloadable "dm mods" basically alter the main menu adding buttons for these console commands.
So IF a "HL2 DM mod" or some other mod has an foreign .exe file, it is most certainly a trojan/virus of some sort. Even if it launches the game fine and the mod works (the mod is so simple that these fake exes are easily made believable enough). Don't try.
Right now the best way to play HL2 online is to just search for a guide that tells you how to make the "mod" yourself (as in getting to play it, it's in the game already but really crappy). That way you don't download anything and get no trojans.
Before the full SDK is released, download any mods with super duper extreme caution! (and before the SDK expect all minimods to suck too ;p no offence to any mod team or anything).
