ill buy hl2 over steam, so the game will be connected to my steam account will it?
but WHAT IF my steam account would ever be banned or deleted or WHATEVER do i loose hl2 then? can't i store the cd-key seperatly?
I dont ask this because im goin to cheat or so but because im a bit afraid of having all those games only connected to this little steam account! what if im hacked or i loose my password and email adress?

Soo... Are you a moron? You just answered your own question, well, almost.

First of all, if your account is banned, you're banned, that's it. Secondly, you can store your key on paper can't you? It's not that hard now is it? You can create a new account at any time and download the games how many seperate times you want as long as you don't try to play them at the same time.

If you're "Hacked" and "Lose" your emailadress (Don't get why you would need to have it, you only need to remember it but yeh) and password then it's not VALVes fault. Besides, if you get hacked and someone takes a CDkey you have on paper it doesn't make a difference now does it?

Logic, baby, logic.

then you have to email sierra and notify them about the problem. ususally steam will be able to sort it out, so just email them aswell, or look at their FAQ. i wouldnt worry about it, as all the games are listed to the account, so if yours gets 'hacked', steam can restore it and all the purchases will still be there.

if your "banned" means VAC banned then you still can play any single player game, or online on non-secure servers.
if you mean that your account is banned from use, then you have done something bad.

So if we buy through steam, we get a cd key? Now I'm interested in buying through steam..... Tell me more about this, I never really was interested in buying over steam, cuz I wanted the cd's. But, if having it on steam is even safer (dont have to ever worry about cd's scratching), tell me the plus's and negatives to buying through steam.

you can only register a cdkey to 1 account. if ur account is banned u cannot create a new login and register the new cd key there.

no. u get a "PRODUCTKEY" which simply allows you to play the game. this is STEAMs dirty way to have fun with us. now I am undecided if I want to purchase right away through steam or wait for my CD and key. I just feel better having the physical key/cd's
Steam Powered Web Site:
If you purchased a game online through Steam you do not get a CDKey, instead you get a ProductKey. ProductKeys are registered immediately to your Steam Account so you can begin downloading the game right away. You do not get a CDKey number when you purchase a game online.

If you have a problem with a game that you purchased online through Steam, please submit a support request with a description of your problem and your account information to get assistance.

wrong, read above

If your steam account gets hacked, immediatley email valve to have your acount password reset. Then, when you get emailed your new password, log into steam with that.

If your account gets hacked and the hackers use cheats that get you banned, then your stuffed. Either leave VAC servers alone or pay for a new copy... tough, but thats how it is.

WOW THAT SUCKS
where can i ask for a password reset?

Just go to the support section of steampowered.com

this is all very scary.
I would never ever use cheats, I never ever have, and NEVER will... but basically if somone hacks me/gets into my account somehow.. and maliciously uses cheats, I lose all my games?
people are saying well, you can play on non-vac and sp.. but **** that.
I never play sp anymore, or Non-vac games.

you are telling me.. valve has no way to find out that a different ip logged into my steam account.. or something.
that Im simply screwed if something retarded like that happens?
I mean as a safety precaution.. Im thinking of making a new steam account simply to keep my hl2 seperate from my hl1 stuff.

No, I think VAC only bans you for the game the cheats were used on.

No, valve can't use IP's to check, some have dynamic IP's and others could use proxys.

Don't worry, it is very hard to hack into a steam account (Never heard of it happening myself) so as long as you don't go passing your password around in servers or somthing stupid like that, your fine, so relax.

this is such a tricky issue if u think about it.
i mean any Steam user can log onto their account using any PC with internet access... and so u see the problem with IP detection?

in ur scenario a user can log on with a different IP, cheat/hack and then log in with the normal IP only to notice the ban-age and simply all the user would have to do is dispute it with Valve saying his account was hacked.. and the proof being the different IP.

i guess all MP players/users will have to be VERY careful with the account information.

i think its a bit more sophisticated than that. I mean you would HAVE to prove you were hacked..like a password change or something.

Its all gravy, just dont tell anyone ur account info..that simple, i mean dnt even write it down lol, i have never had too, ad have never had a problem with it all.

since you're only going to verify your cd-key once, you won't need to sign in after you sign in once. so you can play the game offline, which means after the first time, it won't have anything to do with your steam account.

True for single player, but hes on about multiplayer.

ok, here's the way it works:

when you buy a game through steam, the game is applied to your account. there are no cd/product keys to deal with, it's just added to your steam account...

when you buy the game retail, you get a cd/product key that you enter into steam. once that key is entered, the game will be tied to your account, just as if you had purchased it through steam. at that point, the cd/product key is useless. you could show it to everyone in the world, and it wouldn't matter, since the key has already been applied to your account. no one else can use it ever again.

any questions?
