I've spent most of this morning trying to create a transparent spray, with no success. I had no problems creating the alpha layer in Photoshop CS, but whenever I tried to save the file as a TGA that layer wouldn't be included (the checkbox would be grayed out, and the background of the image would appear as white).
I finally figured it out - the problem was that I was trying to create a spray from a GIF file, which uses indexed color. In order for the alpha layer to save to the TGA file, you need to be using RGB.
So, for anyone having problems similar to mine, open up the Image->Mode menu, and make sure you have a check next to "RGB Color".
Oh yes, almost forgot the picture of my spray:
