Importing .SMD>Maya problem

I have Maya 6.5 and i followed this tut: http://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Modifying_a_Source_Model_in_Maya to the letter and when i go to import, there is no "SMD" option. I then tried to go into the "Plugin manager" window and its not available in there either. Anyone manager to get their Maya to work? Any tips?

is there not a new menu at the top called valvesource?
