Yah, so I finally got to play yesterday night and I'm playing today. Wow. This game is the greatest thing that ever happened. :afro:
The characters... the sounds... the sights... they're a work of art. This is how a game should be made.
I'm only on the hoverboat part, but what I've seen so far has impressed me beyond belief. Linearity? No more linear than Half-Life 1. What did you expect, Morrowind? Storyline... not confusing yet. I loved it how ... err.
You really have to pay attention to the things around you to comprehend the story. It's awesome so far. The little things you pick up...
The humor is good too and I like the references to Black Mesa.
The graphics are amazing, but the gameplay is where it's at. The physics is a.m.a.z.i.n.g. How can anyone say it isn't revolutionary? I've never had so much fun flinging stuff around! Plus all the cool strategies.
The flaming barrels are the best. So much fun to play around with them.
And then comes the AI. I'm playing on Normal and I'm damn impressed. The fricken zombies are even smart (though to a lesser level). The Combine are amazing, even the manhacks and the ANNOYING HELICOPTER. That thing can find me anywhere.
The sounds are awesome, and some of the sounds are from the original Half-Life so I like that too.
The characters. Yes, one of the greatest parts of the game. Spectacular. They look so REAL and ACT so real. The expressions are perfect and the voices are perfect.
If I had to nitpick, a few things:
God, I can't wait to play this on my projector and 6.1 system. I hope it gets fixed soon.
I will be having a ball replaying the whole game once I finish.
Rating? 9.9/10.
I've never had so much fun before, and I let my friend play and he's like, "I am so getting this game." He even thought up stuff I wouldn't have... I remember someone saying that the newbies will be the ones having fun because they haven't been exposed to super-linear games. And it's true... they are more creative.

You appear in Dr. Breen's office and he just says, "Gordon Freeman."

The Vortigaunt you first meet, "We share the same history" or something to the effect of that. Also, "It is the Free Man, the Combine's reckoning." Dr. Breen's "Gordon Freeman" and the announcement he makes once you get to the one place (open the gates) on the Hoverboat part.

Hitting the switch and the smart comment Barney makes.

On the hoverboat part, where a Combine dude is manning a machine gun, I picked up a barrel and crouched and moved toward him so he couldn't shoot me.

If I had to nitpick, a few things:
- Fast weapon switch; I want MOUSE WHEEL fast weapon switch. I find myself pressing the wrong numbers to get my guns.
- Guard die sounds. Not too annoying, but just a tad. I love the sound effect though.
- Load times... it might be because I put Steam on my root drive instead of on my seperate SATA drive.
- Minor slowdowns. There's some minor slowdowns, but not too bad. I did expect better though. (1280x768, 4xAA/16xAF, 3Ghz, 1GB RAM) I will probably use 2xAA instead of 4xAA.
