Well after a week of playing the game (now on Highway 17) I thought I would write a small first impressions post!
I have to say the whole install process took time, but is a very clever way to setup a game.
Anyway got the game to start and just from the initial 5 minutes you get the feel of how much effort has been put into the game.
Atmosphere I feel is the key to this game. It never lets up. At nearly every turn their is something interesting. Levels are brilliantly constructed especially Highway 17. One of the best designed levels I have ever played. The way it mixes the use of the jeep and you being on foot is brilliant.
Another real treat for me has been the very mature way the future has been represented. It could have been all blade runner flying cars etc. But no its a weird look at future technology. The Combine guns etc are very well concieved.
That brings me onto the excellent way things are used. The Ant Lion ground basher thing I thought was superb. THe traps in Ravenholm. Using the giant Magnet to pick up truckcrates etc.....all wondeful and great fun.
Its this level of detail in the game that really has impressed me. The grafdti on the wall, propaganda flyers stuck on walls. Also the way the resistence is a mish mash of different people. Young old, different countries etc! Superb stuff.
Also the creepy zombies.....I hate the one that has all the black spiders on it....horrible that one!
I hear a lot of people on here liking the free form game play of Far Cry which I enjoyed very much. I also feel Far Cry runs better than HL2. But hl2 has the edge due to its amazing atmosphere, physics and attention to detail. It may be quite linear, but its a hell of an exciting ride!
Only downer for me was some of Ravenholm.....a wee bit repetitive....but scary as fook
Well done Valve for creating a great game and one that I am sure I will enjoy to the very end.
