Well, i made a simular thread back a year ago.
I want to see what the responses will be this time.
Have your grammar (yes i ****ing know i spelled it wrong) improved by talking over the forums? Hell it has for me, i can look back to my 2003 posts, and almost cry at the AOL talk i use. *cries* Alright, let the discussion beggin!(i also know this is spelled wrong, **** off!)

not only has hl2.net improved my grammar... it's kept my general english skills top notch :)

<3

Not really, I've always posted using mostly good grammar and spelling and whatnot. It varies based on my mood though - sometimes I'll be super-correct and capitalizing things, like I am right now, but sometimes I'll type like this:

of course english is my first language so I imagine it's somewhat of a different ballgame

I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have got MVG in English (top grade), if it wasn't for hl2.net.

I've always been a bit spelling-cautious. But yeah it did stem from this forum :).

HL2.net + voice communication in Natural Selection certainly helped me a lot :)

I'm a bit of a grammer and spelling nazi anyways, when I can be arsed, so I think it stems from MSN messenger usage actually.

yea i'll bet it does, because people feel it's necessary to talk in a more mature tone (typically) so they can sound more intelligent. At least i think they do.

Besides why use a small word when the definitive word will suffice?

I think eventually it just comes naturally, after a lot of practice, and yeah, people like to sound intelligent (although intelligence isn't all about being a wonderful speaker/writer). But when it comes down to it in real life, being articulate could give you the edge over someone being a bit lazy with their language.

Slightly, yes. I take great pride in upholding my grammar, even when resorting to slang-ish talk.

Unfortunatly it also bugs me when people don't give a damn about their own, and downright horrifies me when people completely slaughter the English language with talk like "iono wht u thnk about b4 blablabla..."...

Every time a person writes such crap, it makes me want to kill an AOL-kiddie...

Fortunatly, seeing as English isn't my native language, I'm legally excused in any mistake I make. :D

Ah yes. When someone adds you and starts talking 'liek ths wth thu stoopid tlking nd txt spk' Then it's just nice to be able to talk down to them while typing properly :D

I live in England, whatever I type is good english even if it's pure crap and doesn't make any sense

to me, if its readable at all its fine, as long as its not like "lol thsi thred is gfreat!" you know what I mean

My grammar has always been amazing. :)

Will Smith has a truely extensive and amazing vocabulary, second only to his infinite wisdom and mastery of grammer.

I started learning English when I was like 7, when my brother showed me Dune II :D

I mastered the writing part and most of the speaking part when I was 12. Then I had English as a course in school and that further honed my skills.

And I'm downright shocked that some American/English guys here write some of the most basic things wrong (e.g. you're/your ) . As Hectic Glenn said : It is incredible how some Dutch people master the English language.
:p

It's true!

I think that internet forums have been degrading my use of the english language for years though.

Having once wanted to be a writer, I've always had good typing and language skills.

Yeah.... I accidently wrote "Ty" and "Ftw" in my journal a few times.
EDIT: School Journal, that is. Gotta hate writing it it about, well, whatever the teacher thinks is stupid.

I'm a bit of a spelling/grammar nazi too, although it's mainly txt spk that I can't stand.

I mean, is there some difficulty with pressing one extra letter on the keyboard that makes 'wat' so much easier to type than 'what'? I just don't get it.

I irritate all me friends on MSN by making them think about that.

I'd like to think my English is great anyway, this forum hasn't improved it really, just allowed me to continue keeping it on 'form' so to speak.

I will however, write things like 'gonna' 'dunno' 'tbh'. Things which just make life easier, faster and people still understand them. I don't think theres anything wrong with the occassional bit of colloquial language.

And as Beerdude mentioned, i'm very very impressed by the quality of the Dutch's english speaking. It's nearly faultless, and better than some english folk hehe. I must also give credit to many of the scandinavian members, i've seen good stuff from them too.

Yet another ironic thread where people say they have good spelling and "grammer" skills.

Be quiet you fool, my spelling is immaculate.

~god damn edit times

crushie don't edit my POSTS

kk :smoking:

I've always been a grammar nazi, so I don't really notice the grammar of my posts improving, but their style has changed quite a bit. I know a lot of the people here have probably become more articulate with time, but I've found myself losing some of the formality and being a bit more colloquial.

While we're add it, I'd like to call your attention to the heart warming story of our good friend Suicide42. The first post I remember from him was a defense of the much-hated Deus Ex: Invisible War, and it looked a little something like this: Click!

Naturally the poor guy incited my righteous rage, and I remember spending a good portion of my days pacing back and forth salivating over the prospect of one day making him pay for his unholy abuse of the English language.

Yeah... I don't really know where I'm going with this, but I have to say I'm very impressed with his newfound eloquence and ascension to the almighty News Writer. So, eh... Congratulations, Suicide42! YOU ARE WINNER!!!

No. Spelling perhaps, but not grammar.

When you talk on a forum you place commas when you stop to think or where you think you would take a breath when talking in real life, you don't actually bother following the real rules of commas.

I'm always right. The world is wrong.

And I never claimed to practice what I preach.

Reading in general has improved my writing. Forums, encyclopedias, Dickens, Malcolm X, Christ.

One of the most consequential parts is seeing how ridiculous a person looks when he misuses the language.

When I first got here, I wouldn't dare to type complete answers because my english was repetitive and unclear, since I usually speak french. Now, it has improved and I'm one of the best speaker in my grade when it comes to grammar and figures of speaking.

So, eh... Congratulations, Suicide42! YOU ARE WINNER!!!

Man, I remember that thread. :D or D: ?

I haven't really got any more elquoent since joinging these foruyms...just clevererer.

You also misspelled "similar" wrong... and "grammar" right. OMG! You don't even know which ones you are missing!
