Info. for Optimizing CS Performance

This isn't anything *too* new but it is my experience so far with Source.

Here are my specs:
AMD 2500 running @ 1.8 Ghz
Radeon 9000
512MB Noname Ram

I do plan on upgrading when Half Life 2 comes out, or around then. However, I've been able to run CS:S surprisingly well (50-100fps; average around 50-60 on average servers of 10v10, dips at worst maybe 25-30 in an intense gunfight with many grenades, etc.).

DX lvl 8.1. Medium textures, low shadow detail, low water detail, low model detail. No AA/AF.

Now for the console commands...

mat_bumpmap 0
mat_specular 0

Those are HUGE frame savers.

Misc. commands that, in total, give me maybe another 10-15:

fps_max 100 (instead of the default 300; dipping wildly from 200 to 50 or whatever is quite noticable).

cl_smooth 0 (maybe not fps, but just put it on 0, hehe)

cl_bloom 0

budget_show_history 0

fog_enable 0

r_shadows 0 (takes off shadows from players; gameplay wise I've never been warned someone is coming/around a corner from a shadow, so I don't care)

r_waterdrawreflection 0
r_waterdrawrefraction 0

My default water looked pretty good -- clear, rippling, etc. However, with those two commands the water begins to look...funny. It sorta looks like liquid mercury. It helps me more gameplay wise than fps wise, since in aztec it makes the islands and people in the water stand out very well (check pictures below).

Glancing through the cvar lists, there seems to be a lot of random things you can remove. I'm not sure if they would have as much impact as the above, however.

Keep in mind things like r_particle 0 and r_3dsky 0 are considered cheats and do not work unless sv_cheats = 1 (which I have asked VALVe to change, heh).

If anyone can point anything else out to help even further I (and others) would be quite appreciative.

EDIT: the first picture is my default water, the second is with the two commands = 0.

Handy post, a fried of mine needs some FPS gaining tips...

BTW: You seriously need to increase your gamme (via Video tab), can't see anything at all in those pics.
