Insane laggy flashlight

Hi,

i've recently started playing half-life 2 again, but with this "improved engine" when I turn the flashlight on my framerate drops from 160+ to ~30.
How is this possible? Is this intended or can this be fixed somehow? I refuse to believe that they let the performance of the game drops with 80% just for some shiny new flashlight effect, I don't want to sacrifice all the other visuals to make the game playable in dark areas! Is there any solution to this?

Go to options, click the video tab, click the advanced button, set "Shadow Detail Level" or something similar (not sure the exact name) to medium. That will set the dynamic lights to work like normal HL2, including the flashlight.
