Hey guys.

I was just wondering if it would be possible to install (legal copy) The Orange Box on another computer, because when when I play pretty much ANY half-life 2 game on my computer, it crashes every 30 minuites. thats why i wanted to install it into my dads laptop, which doesnt crash. I am useing the same Steam ID and I was wondering if anyone else has done it or if its possible.

any help would be appriciated. :)

it doesn't matter where you install it as long as you use your account.

I am using the same Steam ID and I was wondering if anyone else has done it or if its possible.
You can do that, but use the same account or else HL2 and Ep1 will show up as your own games rather than gifts.

I had to swap my steam games onto my dads laptop as well cause my computer is starting to die on me ='( .

When you first installed the Orange Box you must have had an option to make a new Steam Account or login to an existing one, when installing on your Dad's laptop you now want to chose the latter option.

Or you could try to find out the reason for the crashes you are getting.

ive been having these crashes since summer of last year, but neither me or my dad could find why...

but i did try installing he orange box on the laptop, but when i started up any of the games, it does the whole "valve man" thing, but as its loading the menu, it stays a grey color, the screen goes black, themn the computer makes a "pop" sound, then it changes to to a multi colored screen with like... green on the top left, fading into red on the top right wit red fadeing into yell on the bottom left, etc. then i wait for half a minuit or so and the BSoD pops up for a couple of seconds then the computer reboots.

when it reboots, it doesnt say that the computer was turned off wrong or anything. its quite strange...

i am also useing the same ID as the one on the other computer. I dont have another accont. Would makeing a new account and installing it there make it work?

Sounds like it's the laptop's fault, not your account.

What are the specs on that laptop? Chances are it's not even capable of running the Source engine. I have a Inspiron 1520 with an Intel IGP and it just barely manages to run CS:Source (25 fps at medium settings). I wouldn't even try the Orange Box on my laptop. :|

Your account is literally online, and doesn't have any hardware requirements, and is not associated with any particular computer, much like your HL2.net account. You can install Steam onto any computer. Logging into Steam with your account details will give you any access to any Steam games you have installed, or access to download any Steam games which you have registered that aren't installed.

So if you got kidnapped and woke up somewhere on the other side of the world in an entirely different life, you could install Steam on a computer, log in, and voila, you can download all your old games without the CDs.

But you can't use the account on more than one computer at once, as I'm sure you know.

i dont exactly know my specs, but it can play counter-strike very well and garry's mod (9) perfectly with all the bloom and stuff. the laptop also has DX9, while my computer has DX8 (and a 4-5 year old gx card and motherboard :o) so it should be able to run it.

also, when i log on in the computer and laptop, it has different games on each one. but shouldn't it be able to work? i mean its the same account, so does it recognize it as installing on a seperate computer, or the same one?
(sry if it doesn't make alot of sense)

No. It didn't :p. The same games will appear on different computers using the same account in the Games section of Steam. You still need to install them on both machines.

And you can find out your specs using a "dxdiag" command in the Run tool (Start->Run->dxdiag). It should have most of your hardware information in there :).

well... the games are different in each computer, like counter-strike isn't intalled in the computer, but is installed in the laptop.

but anyway. my specs for the DESKTOP:

OP: Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition (5.1,Build 2600)
System Manufacturer: ECS
System Model: P4M800PRO-M
BIOS: Default System BIOS
Processor: Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 3.00GHz (2 CPUs)
Memory: 1024MB RAM
Page file: 397MB used, 3598MB available
DirectX version: DirectX 9.0c (4.09.0000.0904)

it says it's DX 9, but thats because we tried downloading it. the CARD is only DirectX 8, and thats what all my games run at. (also, how do you copy and paste the info? I had to copy it all down maually.)

ill get the laptop's info when i figure out how to copy and paste it.

You have to install them on each computer. If you go into Steam, you'll notice that the games are still there, they're just not Downloaded/Installed. So you'll have to install the games on the laptop.

There's also a graphics information tab in the dxdiag.

okay,

Device:
Name: NVIDIA GeForce FX 5500
Manufacturer: NVIDIA
Chip Type: GeForce FX 5500
DAC Type: Integrated RAMDAC
Approx. total memory: 256.0 MB
Current Display Mode: 1024 x 768 (32 bit) (85Hz)
Monitor: Plug and Play Monitor

(yeah, its an OLD Nvidia chip)

Ill probly get the laptop specs later tonight or tommorrow. I cant get them now.

YAY! it works now! Idont know why, but i triedit recently and idecided to actually work! it makes all happy inside! :E

the phong shadeing rules too.

but how do i fix the pagd pool memory error thing?

That sounds to me like a bug that was fixed in an update...

Have you got the latest updates?

Have you tried the fix here http://www.halflife2.net/forums/showthread.php?t=131328
That's what i'am using and it fixed it for me.

I'am glad you can get all the new graphical features i'am so jealous of you now.

lol, yeah. the phong-shading owns :E

but yeah, i tried that. but i dont think i did it right, because it nearly destroyed the laptop. I set it to the Hexadecimal 18000000 setting. is that how you do it?
'cause it sure didn't work the way I did it. ;(

(im gonna try Ep.2 with all ze graphix too:))

Phong-shading...??

IGN: What is phong shading?

Charlie Brown: When you look at surfaces that are metallic on a really bright day and you see a highlight, that's basically phong shading, it emulates that. It brings out the bright, purely saturated highlights that you see in the world, that are view dependent. So if you're looking at the whiteboard [points to a whiteboard in the room] and you see a reflection or if you're looking at the oil on my skin as I move around, it kind of moves and changes. So that's what this is here [points to screen of character art], and what's nice about it is you see the wrinkles and it brings out a lot of detail in the character without actually putting a lot of visual noise in the characters as far as painting them into the texture, things like that. It's just as the characters move, they look a lot more detailed. And also the way we use it, we tend to, kind of, make the lines more thick than they normally are in the edges, so you still get that cartoony look but not quite so on or off.
It's definitely in TF2, I'm not 100% sure about Portal and Ep2.
