Installation error :(

Guys whenever i try to install hl2 from the DVD-edititon i get this error in the middle of my installation:

my frinds tell me its a common error and i should return the game to the shop and they'll give me a new one,but i dunno what i should really do

You have to select to install Counter-strike: Source, otherwise you get this error.

You can delete CS:S after the installation.

did you had steam installed before?? Uninstall it, and install the game then...

This could very likely be related to your optical drive - it was in my case. Try a different drive - easy if you have two on your machine.
Otherwise, try and borrow an external to do the install. The only other option is to check for firmware/driver updates for your drive(s) or buy a new one.
I spent 3 1/2 hours on Saturday installing Steam (which was an even bigger nightmare) and HL2 itself.

I was using my DVD drive and had four failures in a row - sometimes on disc 2 or 3 or even 4 (it hurts when you get close ennough to taste it). Changed to my CD-RW and went smooth as silk.

But all is well now, and the game is ******* great!

I got this first time I tried to install it.
I had deselected CS:S.
Next time I just didn't bother with deselecting it and just sped through the Next buttons until it began installing.
Went just fine that time.

Yeah, I had the same issue. Installing CS:S solved it for me too.
