installation help!

i just got hl2 and im so aggrevated im about to take it back. after spending half an hour trying to type in the cd key, only to finally find the help file at steams website tell me i dont need to type in the complete key (only the first line). i finally get the cd key in then i get this message

please someone help me out, i have no idea whats going on, and theres no f@$#^#%^ support number i can call.
