Installation problem

Hi. I searched the forum and saw similar problems but no solution, but hopefully someone has licked this already.

My system:
Gigabyte GA-K8NXP-SLI-F6 moboard, latest drivers from Nvidia
Athlon FX55
PNY Quadro 3400 PCIe videocard, 71.24 drivers
4GB 3200 RAM
WD 75GB 10k boot drive SATA
1x300GB,1x250GB, 2x250GB RAID0 SATA drives
Sony DRU-500A IDE DVDRW drive
Apple 30 inch monitor
WinXP SP2, brand new install, DX9c
Halflife 2 DVD Edition (I try to install HL2, HL1, CS)
(DVD had worked fine on my prior machine, which had
FireGL X3-256 at 2560x1600 so I don't think it should bomb
on the resolution and anyway the default is 1280x800)
I've run 3dmark05 and it runs fine, so I don't think there's anything obviously unstable with my setup.

Here's the problem. First I installed off of DVD - Steam installed just fine, then went to HL2. The machine variously hung with BSOD and "machine_check" error or just hung on Sharedcontent.gcf.

So I then logged into Steam and used my account (already registered from my prior machine) to dowload the whole HL2 set from Valve itself last night, thinking maybe somehow the DVD got scratched or something.

When I tried it today it got past the Valve screen and went to the 'fuzzy' screen where it loads and then becomes clear when finished. This time however it hangs on that Loading screen, such that cntrl-alt-delete doesn't even work - mouse cursor works fine though. I tried this a few times.

Any help at all would be appreciated.

thx

Also I should note I tried it with the 67.22 drivers as well to no avail.

thx

Hi all

FYI - I (appear to) have finally fixed the problem. When I tried HL:Source after all my problems I got the "Memory at 0x012917b0 could not be "read" error. I looked that up at steampowered.com under support and found that the -window +mat_force... suggestion worked.

Now I have to go into video options and switch from running in window to running full screen, but otherwise everything else works.

:flame: A special raspberry / Bronx cheer / Dishonorable Mention must go to Valve tech support who sent me a completely boilerplate email suggesting that my problem was my LCD monitor and I should just lower the resolution. Thanks guys for the effort in reading my email and thinking about my actual problem...

Hope this helps someone.
