Installing HL2 sans internet

Taken a look around here, but can anyone say how the frig I'm supposed to play HL2 and CS:S from retail without any sort of internet connection? Just pointing me where any thread saying how will do. Thanks.

you cant!!!! read the requirements on the box, it specifically says 'INTERNET CONNECTION REQUIRED'

edit: well you can play but you would just have to use an internet connection beforehand to install,then your good to play without the internet

Would simply using the college network or an internet cafe work, or (as I'm guessing), is it only possible to connect to steam for first-time installation and then play offline thereafter using the same PC?

AHAHAHAHAAHAHAA - you'd THINK so, wouldn't you. They even lead you to believe that is the case. Sadly, it's not. Once you have installed Steam and verified your game with Steam, it will update itself. Then it will install the game. Then it will spend a few hours updating the game. You didn't want to update right now? Too bad. Then you can play, and even select "don't update my games" and "play in offline mode". But in a few weeks, you will go to play, and it will cheerfully tell you no more playing untill you go online and update Steam, and check for game updates.

Either way, it's in your best interests to update HL2, since it will make the game load much faster, fix some bugs, and (I think) also update some graphical things.
