Installing new WD hdd

i bought a new western digital 250 gb hdd last nite to replace my aging 40 gb hdd. i want to install windows xp on it but i cant seem to be able to install the xp cd. the instructions from the hdd box says i should use the disc that came with it but i get this error msg

strike F1 to retry boot. F2 for setup smth like that.

i change the boot sequence to cd rom then hdd then diskette, but i still get the same error msg...

this 250 gb hdd is the only hdd i will be using. so its basically a new computer except with old parts. its a dell dimension and the bios recognized the new hdd but i cant boot up the cd...

What does the CD say on it? With a dell it should be a purple CD that says operating system at the top.

Have you tried a non-Dell Windows XP CD? Dell and M$ would only want you to use the Windows CD on their computer, not your own. They wouldn't be able to tell if you put in a new HDD. Did you say there was a CD that came with the HDD? Cause that's news to me.

I've had over 10 dells with xp on it and all them allow you to install the OS on different hardware as long as you chose to order the additional OS cd for $10 when ordering your computer. I always opt for this option, if you don't I think you have to boot from a seperate partition but since I've never done this I can't comment on it.

the hdd came with a cd and it said that i dun have an OS installed, i should boot from this cd

yeah, its purple saying windows xp. the cd works but i cant seem to install it on the new hdd. im trying to find the cmos jumper but i cant...
