Installing old version of DirectX

How can I install an old version of Direct X?

HL 2 Ep 2 is crashing at a cutscene and I want to try direct x 8 instead of 9 as I've heard from someone else that their game works fine with Dx8.
I've downloaded directX 8 but after installing it my computer still reads as having DirectX 9 installed.

How can I override my computer to rollback directX?

You don't need to install an older version, just run the game with '-dxlevel 8' (no quotes) in the launch options. These can be found by right-clicking the game in the Steam games list and going to its Properties.
