I need some info for a new intake fan that will be mounted on the front of my case. I'm not sure how to figure out what fans will fit my case. Also, what company would you recommend? I want to get it from Newegg, and my computer is an HP Pavilian a550y.

What size is the fan blade (the diameter)? It is measured in mm.

Long live the metric system..... sorry don't know what came over me. (I'm so bored :) )

Well, I haven't ordered the fan yet, which is why I need info. I called HP and they could only tell me that my chasis is a panther light. I'm not sure if a fan will mount on my case correctly because of screws and such.

I know Dell's and HP's computer sometimes use different standards but I never heard of them using a different size fan than normal.

Measure it and let me know. I'm willing to bet 2 pennies that it is a 80 mm fan.

What do you want me to measure? Bear with me Blah, i'm not much of a hardware guru. ;)

EDIT: I measured my rear outtake fan, and it's closer to 130mm. Would it be a 120mm, or am I out of luck?

Holy fajitas, Batman!!! 120mm? That is a larger fan than I expected from a HP.

You want to measure the diameter of the circle where the fan blade spins. Or you can measure the diameter of the fan blade. Whatever is less confusing for you. You should get the same (or close to the same) measurement.

If it measures a 120mm, that is the fan size you need.

Edit: Ok, I re-measured the fan because I did it wrong the first time. The diameter of the fan is exactly 90mm, but I don't know of anywhere that sells 90mm fans.

90 or 92 mm? They sell both of those sizes at newegg.com

When buying a fan, there are two primary things you want to look at. Noise (in DB) and air flow (in CFM). Unless you are overclocking (which doesn't look like it), you want to find the fan with the lowest noise.

Ok, are thermaltake fans good? That is what I am currently considering.

OMG :(

Why do you need to replace the fan, I am just curious...Cause I got a 90mm one on the back of this pc...

I'm not replacing a fan, i'm getting a new one for the front of my PC, and there hasn't been one there before. My comp has been overheating lately.

Overheating? What symptoms? How old is your computer? Is there alot of dust in your computer? What are your computer specs (include power supply wattage)?

My computer is about a month old actually, Here is a page with it's specs:

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...&lang=en&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&docname=c00097031

My computer is a 3 gig though, with a Radeon 9800 and 1 gig of RAM.

Well, I was playing DoD earlier, and while a level was loading, it just reset on me. Later on I was talking to Shuzer on AIM, and it happened again when nothing was happening. I moved the Hard Drive to an external 3.5 bay that HP had so conviniently placed on the front intake grate (they like to call it an internal 3.5 bay). I ordered a PCI fan today, so that should take some heat off the Video Card. I checked the temp the second time it reset and it was at 55 C, and it's now at about 46 C after I moved the HD and re-located the computer.

Fan won't solve that problem. DOD isn't a type of game that creates much heat for a processor or video card.

To me it sounds like a power supply problem. Since you just bought your computer, call up to HP tech support and complain and say your computer needs a new power supply unit (PSU).

55C is high, but not high enough to cause problems. Buying a fan will not fix your problem.

All right, if you say so. I'll look into it tomorrow. Thanks.

Yeah, hp's don't put that great psu's into there pcs...God help them if they spent and extra $10 on each psu it would save us all.

Would a PSU upgrade help my sytem out at all, or should I just request a new one?

PSU would help if you are not getting enough power to certain components.

That's probably not the case then, but I will have to upgrade eventually.

I strongly disagree with that statement. If your system does not have proper cooling, and your graphics card gets progressively hotter, even an old game (engine) such as DoD WILL overheat your graphics card and can potentially cause reboots. I had it happen to me when I had improper cooling. I never had this issue when I had my case open and a fan blowing on it (obviously now, I have better cooling and don't need my case open)..

Hey, building on that, Sedako, try running your system with an external desk fan blowing into your case with the side panel off. See if the problem still persists. blah may be right, it MIGHT not be overheating your graphics card.. but, it's certainly a possibility (and a strong one in my mind), that's a good way to check.
