Several slides, which presumably come from a roadmap of Intel Corp., that have been published over HKEPC web-site suggest that Intel’s forthcoming G965 chipset will have a built-in graphics core that not only supports DirectX 9.0 shader model 3.0, but also will have DirectX 10 shader model 4.0 functionality. In case the information is correct, this may be the first time for Intel Corp. to offer the latest multimedia functionality with its integrated graphics cores.

Vista fully supports both DX9 and DX10. It's just that you need special DX9 signed drivers(from nvidia and ati) for them to work properly.

It's just that DX10 does not support any Dx9 or lower calls. So you either have to code your game for Dx10, Dx9 or both.

"D3D10 APIs do *not* support D3D9 calls in the same way that D3D9 supported previous APIs. D3D9 is provided and fully supported on vista so if you want to support both you must code that into your engine."

"If you have a D3D9 card today that is supported by Vista then you will continue to get D3D9 acceleration. There's no software emulation or anything else like that no matter what you may have read elsewhere. They will never be able to support D3D10 apps.

When D3D10 cards become available they will support D3D10 apps and D3D9 apps. Again without any software emulation or anything."

These are from the guys who work with the latest DX SDK, which includes DX10.

Well with the big push for DX10 and intel having the majority of the graphics card market share (like 80% or so) Microsoft needs them to support it.

Without DX10 support on the intel chips, DX10 would be a big headache and all programs would need to be written twice for compatability. With DX10 standard on all platforms developers have an easier time (as do consumers).

We also might start to find decent looking games running on your average PC from best buy or dare I say it..........*Dell* :O
