Hey, today, randomly, my internet decided to crap out on me and start slowing down. It's now REALLY slow (3.6KBPS download) and I can't play any games. I'm running a VirusScan, and it says 6 items found. I'm hoping it's nothing super bad, because then I'm screwed. Any ideas?

You sure it's not just your internet service provider peoples?

Refresh your Internet connection by repairing connection.
Star---Network Connections--(Right-Click) Local Area Connection and click repair.
If you you can see two screens icon (Newtwork Status) next to the clock on the Taskbar, right-click it and click repair.

Good Luck.

I repeatedly tried restarting the router earlier, it did nothing, and I'm getting quite freaked out here.
EDIT: If I can't figure this out, I'm gonna call in a pro. So far I'm (sort of) on my way to something.

Could be your neighbors, if you're using the old Shaw setup. Or are you with Telus?

Haha, there's your problem. Shaw ftw!

Are you going to give me any useful advice or continue to be an annoyance?
EDIT: If you can't tell already, I'm getting kinda pissed off, so sorry for being an ass in advance, and just there.

well, there may be leechers.

Or as others have said, your internet is just crapping out. Its only been two hours, relax, give it a day.

Google a program called NetLimiter. It will tell you exactly what program is using what bandwidth, so if its something on your computer, it will show you.

(Get the pro version, its got 28 days fuly featured for free)

Could be someone leeching off you, or it could be something weird on your comp.

Go HERE.

Get TCPView from Networking Utilities, and get FileMon from File Utilities. The first will tell you exactly what apps are using your connection, and on what port (with a very thorough breakdown). Sometimes it doesn't tell you much because it's just lots of instances of svchost.

The second will tell you exactly what files are being written to/accessed on your PC at any given moment. Run it for a few seconds and go to File>(untick 'Capture Events') and scroll through to see what the hell is being dl'ed/ul'ed to /from your comp.

If it's someone leeching your bandwidth, this won't help.

I've been trying for about an hour today, and still no luck. I don't know if anything is wrong with my system, and I just got that thing that link said is good.

Get the 2 utilities I mentioned. Use them right and you'll know for sure if something is using your connection to transfer shit to/from your PC. If they show nothing unusual then you know someone's stoelzing ur bandwidht.

As long as there's no strange applications keeping a port open while some obscure file grows bigger and bigger (or anything like that)...

I dunno what to do if someone's sucking bandwidth off you. Find them and stab their family, I guess. Out of interest, what antivirus did you use?

Edit: it also depends what you're trying to download. Some ISP's use traffic shaping technology which pisses all over peer-to-peer downloads, and it might only have been triggered after your usage went over a certain amount...? Just another possibility. I've been victim to it before and it crippled all my torrent downloads to 5kb/s max. I also remember reading that Canadian ISP's were among the first to start pulling that shit. It shouldn't affect gaming though, that's the thing.

If I were you I'd start thinking about raising this as a support issue with your ISP.

McAfee, sadly. It's never caused a problem for me before...
EDIT: So far it seems stable, it might've been a leecher.
EDIT2: It was a leecher.
