im trying to figure out how it can be applied for gaming purposes. im using IPCop 1.4.2, but this applies to any firewall that uses traffic shaping.

how would you get it to work right, for say steam, when you want all server refreshes to be quick and accurate, plus ping times? i don't know which ports to use, because people use a wide range of server ports, from 27015, to whatever else. so how does one make traffic shaping for gaming work? specifically steam

You would need to know the port Steam uses to update that information.

The port that other game servers use does not matter. That is what port is used on their machine. You want to know how to handle ports being used on your end.

And I do not know that port. hehe

ok i used a packet sniffer while i was refreshing servers in steam. it seems like its port 4028 on my end that communicates with every single server. and 4027 at the beginning. but this isn't the destination port, im wondering if the traffic shaper cares about that, or if i can be on either side of the transfer.

well, im off to lag myself and do some tests, ill report back what i find.
