Intro Movie Lag?

Hey. I've been reading the various threads about resolving in-gameplay lags and various technical glitches (and not looking forward to experiencing them), but I've got a problem that I haven't yet seen here. When I start a new game in Half-Life 2, the title ("Half-Life 2" :laugh:) verrrry slowly fades in, and then the intro scene progresses at a frame or so a second, with heavily jerking audio. It's completely unwatchable and incomprehensible. After it ends, though, and the second the G-Man disappears and I'm on the train (right after the words "Point Insertion" appear), the framerate and audio return to about what I'd expect.

I haven't played past saying hello to Barney (first scripted scene), because I don't want to run into another such glitch down the road without resolving this one. I've done an up-to-date virus scan (and disabled autoprotect), defragged, scanned for spyware, disabled audio hardware acceleration, tried all audio/video quality settings, etc. Recent installation of Windows XP, updated to SP2.

My stats:
Dell Inspiron 8200 laptop
1.6mHz p4-M
GeForce 4 440 Go -- I'm using the newest Dell-released drivers, as NVidia's universal driver specifically excludes the GF4 Go, and says go to the laptop manufacturer. Can I get newer drivers, hacked or otherwise? Edit: The most recent Dell-released drivers are ancient, we're talking 4/18/2003. Says "v42.58" on their website.
768MB PC2700 RAM
Onboard sound

Not the hottest rig around, but enough to run this game at 800x600 and middling settings. What's the deal with the intro sequence? I really want to see it... ;_;
