A recent announcement post over on the Steam Universe group has revealed "Steam Music", a new music management system coming soon to the Steam platform. The system will allow users to manage albums and listen to music from within the Steam client, the Big Picture interface, and SteamOS. A new announcement post on the newly created Steam Music community group has revealed how much of the service will function from within the Big Picture interface.

After pointing Steam to a music directory, users will be able to play albums and create playlists from within the Steam Overlay, removing the need to return to the desktop just to select a new track or skip an unwanted single. From within the Steam Overlay, users will also be able to change the volume settings and adjust the play format, including shuffle and continuous play modes.

As with most new Steam features, Steam Music will be made available soon to a small invite-only group of participants, who will be randomly selected from the Steam Music group. As the beta expands, more users will be added periodically before the service is made available for the entire Steam user base. For more information about the Steam Music service, head on over and join the community group to stay up to date and to be in with a chance of being added to the beta program once it begins sometime soon*.
*Valve Time Status Pending

edit: built in player that would not be very resource-heavy and would let you play music while playing games would quite awsum

Any chance at a Steam music store? Seems like only a matter of time before we can get music/movies/tv from Steam.

Excellent, I'd appreciate this feature a lot!

Hopefully it won't mess with all the id3 tags

and of course, wav support, please!

This is the most important thing in deciding whether Ill use it. Right now I use foobar because it wont **** with my tags, and reads them properly, but very few other apps handle this aspect right.

So far so good, quick bug i found is that the sound bar isn't attached the the player so when you open the volume control and then move the window it wont follow
