Introducing the Google Chrome OS

Argh I thought this said Google Chrome DS.

/disappointed

From what I've read it is just another distribution of Linux which will be badged under Google. If this is the case then what's the point? It's yet another distro of Linux.

They probably saw that Apple is running a not-so-new OS on a new device for a new market (iphone) and want to try it for themselves. If it takes off (netbooks+chrome OS) like the iPhone market then a lot less people will be running WinXP or Win7 on their netbook which is what most of them will be running as it is.
A more focused sub community for linux.

LOL. I need to read more of his rants.

I do think though that the whole thing has been overblown though. It is just Google Linux by the sound of it judging from the latest news sites.

Personally I love the Chrome Browser myself for home stuff. I'm kind of hoping Google get the Mac version out soon so I can start using at work as well. Even at work we officially use Firefox over Safari, ;)

I don't know why you make it sound bad, safari 4 is a fast browser.

Our Mac IT guys loathe it, its memory hog in their opinion. They installed FF on everyones machine instead a while back and haven't considered changing back.

Yea, I install firefox on all our macs also just so people have choices. But a memory hog it isn't:

It uses the Linux kernel. There is a difference between the Linux kernel and a Linux-based distro. Here, I'll explain it for you and everyone else. It's like this: [kernel|userland] = operating system. The kernel interacts with the hardware and the userland interacts with the kernel. A kernel doesn't define an operating system. Mac OS X uses a variant of FreeBSD. Windows uses its own of course. "Linux" as you people like to call it, can actually not use Linux at all! Debian (which Ubuntu is based on) has releases for FreeBSD now. You can actually run Debian Linux on FreeBSD. This would be known as Debian/FreeBSD instead of Debian/Linux. It's a shame that Linux is now a catch-all for Linux-based distros. It really confuses people when you try to get technical.

As far as I can tell it's a Web OS for notebooks. That means it'll boot up quickly and you'll be online. The only applications for it are probably web-based widgets. You might be able to store them locally, but the whole concept is the Internet. If you want a full OS, you might want to try one of those "other distros". I'd compare it to Andriod, but technical people would disagree with me.

You Windows fanboys are a plaque on these forums.
