Afternoon all

Well, ive had my iPod Mini for about 2 years now, and i finally had enough of it yesterday. Since i arrived at Uni 3 months ago, and possibly a bit before, i charge my iPod overnight. In the morning, or whenever i go to a lecture, i tend to listen to it on the walk into the campus.

Its 5 minutes there, 5 back. So yesterday, it died saying 'low battery' on the way back home, with no shuffle on and a middle volume setting. 'what the ***k?' i thought. Thats 10 minutes on a supposedly FULL battery!! Bare in mind i had fully charged it overnight. So i charged it for 4 or so hours before i went back in for some research study. I got 30 mins out of it at best, before it died again.

So, i thought this was crazy, and went into the local Apple store (well, one of those stores that sell and repair apple products etc), and found out the cost of repairing a battery after sending it to Apple would be roughly the same as a Nano...so i bought a Nano as an xmas present to myself, which went through 107 songs on a 1/4 battery life before it died on medium volume setting.

Has anyone else been screwed over by low battery life after a few years of recharging their iPod(s)??? I was well and utterly pissed off with my Mini, i cant even sell the bloody thing now.

Surely you were aware iPods are notorious for having awful battery lives and dying after a short time. That's why many people don't buy them. That's one of the risks you take buying an iPod. Many people seem to be OK, but the problem you are mentioning I've heard from 12 or so more people.

Why would you buy an I-pod?

Its appalling. Breaks easilly, screen scrathes, batteries are crap, and awful value for money. Creative Ftw.

Creative has far better audio quality too.

you buy apple products because of the software not the hardware ..how does creative's itunes equivilant stand up to itunes?

both my ipods going on 3 and 4 years are still giving me a 20 hour battery life out of them and hasnt broke from the abuse ive given it, the screen is a bit scratched but thats because i tend to leave it in my keys in my pocket with it.

on another note, creative has one of the worst warrenties ever. i sent out several previous products for warrenty repair. took ages to fix and they lost one of them stating they never recived it, even though the couriour company states that it was dropped off.

great products, horrible service, sorta like acer.

ANY lithium ion battery will do the same thing. Laptops, other MP3 players with lithium Ion batteries, PDAs, Cell phones, a couple wireless mice. The time it takes to loose it's battery life just depends on use and how often it's recharged. Just have to buy a new battery. Apple's only 'mistake' is that they didn't make it easily replaceable with a snap out battery. But that may have made their Ipods a bit more bulky.

You can also buy batteries with a longer charge than what your Ipod comes with. You just have to open up the casing to put it in which might void the warranty.

I found teh creative warranty service excellant when mine broke, its a fantastic device.

The software however is appalling.

Slightly off-topic, I'm excited about getting a Zune for Christmas. I hate how f*cking "trendy" and "hip" iPods are.

I haven't had any problems with my 2gb nano.

I've had for a year and a half now.
Battery lasts long enough to fulfill my needs.
Haven't had a single scratch on it.(cases ftw.)

My only gripe is the sound quality is a bit shit.

I am planning on getting a Creative Zen Micro soon, though.

change the earphones and it's a world of difference ..the ipod earbuds have crappy tinny sound

icarusintel: you're being anti-bandwagon-esque ..which is exactly what you criticise ipods for

"well I dont like the ipod because it's trendy so I'll go for this ..trendy alternative"

the zune, like most microsoft products is just butt ugly and besides the fm tuner there's not a heck of a lot going for it

edit: my ipod's battery stopped working ..I had it replaced in exactly 4 days (under warrenty) ..and that's waiting for a box to be shipped from apple and then shipping it back

It wasn't any of the advertising or hype surrounding it that made me decide on it. The mp3 player I'm using now is a mobiBLU DAH-1500i
which I have been thoroughly enjoying. But the HD size is becoming an issue. So, I researched many mp3 players and finally decided on the Zune because of the screen size, HD size, the way it felt and looked, and various other features. I didn't pick it because it seemed trendy. And when I'm talking about the iPod I'm talking more about the way it has pervaded society. When I see my grandma walking around with an iPod because she thinks it's cool, it definitely isn't.

just because something has reached peak user rates doesnt mean it's automatically not cool .. ..the beatles were/are listened to by 10's of millions of people ..but that fact doesnt deminish their talent one iota

Yeah, iPods are decent MP3 players.
Just because they're widely used doesn't mean they aren't good music-listening/video-watching devices.
