seeing as how many of you own ipods maybe some of you can answer a few questions for me

the ipod minis

1. are you satisfied with your purchase?
2. is the 4G model enough space for you?
3. Can any type of music file play on ipod or are you limited to a few formats? My guess would be apple's format takes precedent
4. How long does it take to recharge? and how long does a charge last? it says 18 hours but I'm skeptical
5. does it recharge through an ac adaptor or usb?
6. is it worth getting a recharging base?
7. has anyone used it with a charging base speaker system like this ..or is it better to just purchase an adaptor to plug into a regular stereo
8. is there an FM receiver so that I can listen to fm radio?
9. what other uses besides listening to music does an ipod offer ..I know there's calenders etc but they're not really all the useful ..I usually know what day it is :)

answer what you can, thanks in advance :)

I'm not a fan of them, due to reports of their reliability, e.g. they break after about a year, some people are fine though. The new iPod nano screen cracks easily too though.

I can't help you too much, but to say i wouldn't buy one, and that i don't think theres radio, but with regard to other features, i believe the standard iPod (colour version only) allows you to put pictures on it, as a storage device. I have a link for you to read about on somewhere, 2 secs!

ok, I have the iPod Nano, and as someone who swore never to buy an iPod I must say I am utterly infatuated witht he device. It is adorable, stylish, useful, and downright kickass.

To answer your quesetions based on the Nano (i believe they discontinued the mini's, and I would DEFINATLY get the nano over the mini)

1. are you satisfied with your purchase?
Very, very much so (and i was skeptical at first)
2. is the 4G model enough space for you?
Plenty, and its so easy to change music that if you really need to have your 10 gigs worth at some point, you can switch it out. frankly more than 4 gigs is a little much (especially if you are around your computer a lot anyways)
3. Can any type of music file play on ipod or are you limited to a few formats? My guess would be apple's format takes precedent
i have yet to find a song that ive "bought" that wont run on it (though they are all in mp3 or mpeg4 formats)
4. How long does it take to recharge? and how long does a charge last? it says 18 hours but I'm skeptical
at 50% volume my battery lasted a full 30 minutes past the stated 14 hour charge, dunno yet at 100% but probably less. battery life was pretty solid actually. 3 hour charge lasts 14, and you can do an express charge as well
5. does it recharge through an ac adaptor or usb?
comes with USB charger, but you can buy AC adapter (20 bucks), again if you are usually near your computer (im on mine every day) this isnt a problem
6. is it worth getting a recharging base?
again, only if you are not near a computer a lot.
7. has anyone used it with a charging base speaker system like this ..or is it better to just purchase an adaptor to plug into a regular stereo
i have only bought the adapter so i cant help you
8. is there an FM receiver so that I can listen to fm radio?
no, but you can get podcasts (check into them)
9. what other uses besides listening to music does an ipod offer ..I know there's calenders etc but they're not really all the useful ..I usually know what day it is
the nano holds and can display pictures. the quality is actually reallly amazing, and you can sync it up with slideshows. ya it also has a calander, games, address book, and even a stopwatch (those come in handy sometimes =D)

I bought the nano because it suited me well, i have a smallish (bought 3.5 gig) music collection intricatly catalogued and with album art (which is displayed as you listen to the song) basically it was a perfect fit. i would highly reccomend it. (get the 4 gig model though its only 50 bucks more, o and if you are a college student buy from and apple store with your ID adn save 20 bucks) apparently screen can break, BUT apple says they will replace for free, if oyu worry about scratches buy an "iPod condom"

a few things:

apple warrenty is very good (I know I've owned macs for almost 10 yrs) ..they'll replace the ipod if the battery is defective

apple has admitted that the nano screens are crappy ..but only on 10% of them ..they are looking into changing the screens to something else

I'm looking at a mini cuz it's almost $100 cheaper than the nano and I really dont care about being able to display photos ..the screen would be too small to get a good look anyways

you guys have been very helpful (thx, kmack: very informative) ...keep the impressions coming

Two problems with all ipods, battery and headphones. Headphones are sucky and your better off getting some other headphones (I recommend Shure). And the distinctive white headphones makes you a target - make sure you change them!! Apart from that the ipod is a nice little gadget, overpriced though. Xen?/Zen? is supposed to be good aswell, i think its got an AM/FM radio too. I had a 3G, but I kindly let my brother borrow it and he lost it.... Will be waiting for a 5G now.

That's why I've been holding off on the nano

I've lost my link that was many people having problems with Ipods, but the point remains, many Ipods have problems, can you be bothered with the hassle of dealing with a replacement and losing your songs, having to convert them over and over. Also without radio, and other better things out there, i'd go for an i-river or a sony one even perhaps, Ipods are just a fad, which apple knows will die, but keeps releasing variations to keep it afloat. Look around more, find whats the best buy for you.

ipods have been around for more than 5 years ..hardly a fad ..and I've cant complain about apple products cuz in the 10 years I've used apple products I've only had one problem ..the usb port on my keyboard was acting up ..they sent me a whole new keyboard and mouse without even asking for my old one

also ipods are more about the software than the hardware ..I love itunes been using it for years ..what I'd really like out of an ipod is the ability to strweam music from internet radio ...but that's not going to happen anytimes soon ...but podcasting is a viable alternative ..I just like some of the itunes radio stations

1. Extremelly satisfied.
2. More than enough space right now, I have only used up 1/3 of it and its still a lot of music.
3. It plays mp3 pirated and legit, Apples own format, and wavs. It may play others but I havn't really experimented or looked into it yet.
4. Charge for me has lasted around 10 hours of playing music it is probably longer but I havn't had a chance to go further yet. Charging I found takes around 1-2 hours after around that amount of playing.
5. It recharges through USB but you can also get an AC adaptor for it.
6. Don't know because my residence room is pretty small and my PC acts as the perfect base anyway.
7. Again havn't tried it so I couldn't really say
8. No only podcasts.
9. calander, games, address book, and stopwatch. However I don't use any of them simply because I don't really need them or care for having them.

which ipod and which generation do you have?

which color? cant decide ..I like them all except pink ...oh and where? everywhere I see they're all the same price (which isnt surprising cuz apple keeps strict control of their prices ..profit margins are very small)

oh and now that the nano came out do you regret getting the mini?

I've got a 20gig 3rd gen (the one with the buttons above the scroll wheel)

1)Very
2)not applicable
3)just apple's format afaik but itunes changes the format for you
4)not sure tbh... i just leave it charging overnight, and its never died on me apart from when i leave it on all day/night
5)recharges in a plug socket :E
6)not really
7)ive got a travel speaker thing for it, and it's great (not that one, but ive heard that, its great!)
8)no, but afaik you can buy a separate 3rd party device that lets you listen
9)theres games and things, but, like a mobile phone with a load of gimicks that you just end up calling people with, i just use it to listen to music :)

i have a 20 gig but ill answer what i can

1. are you satisfied with your purchase?
very much so.
2. is the 20G model enough space for you?
no, but i can live.
3. Can any type of music file play on ipod or are you limited to a few formats? it can play, aac, mp3, wav, apple lossless, aiff

4. How long does it take to recharge? and how long does a charge last?
no idea for the recharge time, but they do get 18 hours battery, but thats sitting their doing nothing. playing music you usual get 12-15 hours. if your using the back light or eq it drops quite a bit.
5. does it recharge through an ac adaptor or usb?
both, but you have to buy the ac adapter.
6. is it worth getting a recharging base?
its nice, more or less best if you plan on hooking it up to a stereo system
7. has anyone used it with a charging base speaker system like
its ok, the altec lansings are a bit better if your using it for portability.
8. is there an FM receiver so that I can listen to fm radio?
not that im aware of
9. what other uses besides listening to music does an ipod offer ..I know there's calenders etc but they're not really all the useful ..I usually know what day it is :)
contact listing and thats aboutit. you can also buy fm transmitters if you dont have anyway of properly hooking it up to a car stereo

Personally I went with green, its pretty neutral and it looks nice. Bought at Bestbuy I think but I don't know for sure since it was a birthday present.

No regrets since the Nano came out, not because of the problems its experiencing but because I see no reason to go any smaller. The mini is about as small as I want. Plus I would always feel a little nervous about breaking the Nano if I bought it because it just looks so brittle being as thin as it is.

I have an IPod Mini, 6gb one. One of the best purchases I've ever made. I have my entire Bon Jovi collection on it (it's a pretty big collection) and it's still got space for it twice more.

ya that's what I thought too but after reading this it proves the nano can take a lot of punishment

still undecided but you guys all answered my questions ..and some I hadnt thought about, thx again

Angry Lawyer: hahah you manage to squeeze bon jovi into every post

You're not wrong. I honestly could relate Bon Jovi to any subject.

I was a teen when Bon Jovi made it big ...so many guys started crimping their hair and wearing his fashions there were even a few lookalikes that would go to the same bars I did ....got a little creepy. Most guys back then thought Bon Jovi was girly ..but they secretly liked his music ...plus it was a great way to meet girls as most fans were girls

Which is why I can't wait for the next concert. I like older women. There are lots at a Bon Jovi concert. ZOOOOOOOOOOOOMJ!

Jon Bon Jovi's hair is a lot more awesome today than it was back then. More of a choppy, medium-length thing. I need hair like that.

you cougar loving angry lawyer you! just watch out, many of them are at the peak of their sexuality ...gets tiring after awhile :naughty:

battery life is fairly poor but not ridiculous. id say maybe 7 hours? depends on bass, light, shuffle, repeat etc. oh and the headphones are:
1- fairly crap
2- an icon for thieves. white headphones = expensive mp3 player in pocket = mugged

Oh yuss, of this I know. Older women = win. I find they've actually decided what they want, and aren't (usually) put off by the influences of their friends. And they tend to be hawt.
Younger women, however, I find can be really quite childish, and more concerned with self-image than hawt Lawyer action.

hehe just stay away from my wife ..she's not a cougar but falls into that "hawt older woman" category ...well older is relative cuz she's 6 years younger than me

I dont think I'll have a problem with thieves

and ya I've heard a lot about the quality of the headphones ..never did like ear buds

That'd make her in the "early 30's" category, and very much appealing to myself.

With a chin as stern as that, I don't think you will, either.

how does that work? you pre-create a list of songs and it'll play that list? just like in itunes? like "bon jovi songs when I'm sleepy" "bon jovi songs when I'm feeling grumpy" "bon jovi songs when I only have a few minutes on the can doing a number 2"

i need an ipod, cos im on a train 2 hours a day. i get bored shitless. :)

Have you considered the mobiBLU DAH-1500?

ah the mobiBLU, an impossibly smaller mp3 player. very sweet. i would have definitely considered getting that had i not already got my ipod nano. i love apple. I had my ipod mini stolen from my front doorstep before I had even gotten it. Fedex, i think were mostly responsible for replacing it, but Apple emailed me after they informed me about replacing it asking if i wanted to upgrade to the ipod nano for free, an $80 upgrade. I love my ipod nano. Stern, get it. you won't regret it. It complements my powerbook nicely. btw i got the black 4gb. oh, if you do, definitely get a cover for it. The only drawback seems is that nano seems to scratch easily. maybe don't get black then. nonetheless it rocks.

Exactly like iTunes.

I've been looking into Ipods, but i just don't see the real use of them for the average person. Compared to what i use, a Sony CD player, which is nearly 4 years old they're absolutely shit. My CD player cost me £100 almost 4 years ago and it has better sound quality, it has been dropped a dozen times and hasn't broke, it plays mp3 (the format just about every goddamn tune on the net is in) and it doesn't cost in excess of £150.

Now, the Ipods have some better things like, space, but its useless in UK, most people use personal CD players/mp3 players for on the bus or something, like me, i spend around 1 hour a day on the bus in between working (30min there, 30min back) which is less than most CD's full playing time so can someone please explain where the Ipods 4gb (they even come in 60gb, lol what a ****ing waste of money) storage becomes useful and not just a "bling" thing or something. The size just means you'll loose it and be pissed off a whole lot easier.

I'll be brief, but I just got a Nano, and I am in love with it. Physically in love. My Nano and I will always be together.
