Kevin Garrad of the 3rd Infantry Division is an iPod user for life?which incidentally got extended thanks to Apple's little music player. He was on patrol in Iraq when he met an armed insurgent carrying an AK-47. Both opened fire, and the bullet heading toward Kevin hit his chest right where his iPod was, which was enough to slow down the bullet to not pierce entirely through the body armor.

Today an underground hacker team "web-Hack" from Russia released a whitepaper with results of iPhone firmware research. They reverse- engineered some functions and published this information.

Results of the research shocked the community. Russian hackers found a built-in function which sends all data from an iPhone to a specified web-server. Contacts from a phonebook, SMS, recent calls, history of Safari browser - all your personal information can be stolen.

At present there is no additional information about this issue. Researchers assume that this function is either a debug feature or a built-in backdoor module for some governmental structures. Anyways this function can be used by a trojan-developers or activated by the AT&T.
We will monitor all information about this accident and will publish it immediately.

I call bullshit. There is no way an ipod could slow down that powerful of a bullet.

It provided just enough slowing so that it wouldn't pierce all the way through the body armor.

I don't see what's so physically unsound with that.
 
I'm a bit surprised that a soldier would carry an iPod with him on patrol. I'd think it would be too delicate to take with him on the job.

Whats so physically unsound about that is you have that big of a round traveling around 2500 feet per second being slowed down by a thin piece of aluminum made in china. In addition I have a hard time believing a soldier on patrol in such a dangerous place would be walking around jamming out to his iPod instead of paying attention to what is going on around him. Then add in the fact you had 2 people at that close of a range being able to fire a shot off at the exact same time.

Call me a skeptic if you want but I read everything I see on the internet with a grain of salt, and my bs meter is going off in this perticular instance.

Some soldiers are stupid. One of those stupid ones might think it's a good idea to take an Ipod with him on patrol.

And it's really not all that difficult to believe that an Ipod can slow down a bullet. Key word here is SLOW, not STOP. The body armor alone might not have stopped the bullet, but the armor PLUS the Ipod provided enough resistance to stop the bullet from going into the guy's chest.
 
Your BS meter sucks.

This kind of crazy shit happens all the time. It happens with cell phones too. And no one said he was using his ipod. They said it was in his front pocket. Thats actualy very common in the military due to a long precesion of time with nothing to do or off duty inactivity. So, he was most likly not using it.

Also, the fact that the your knowledge of weaponry is wrong doesnt help you. A bullet proof vest can sometimes stop bullets of that magnitude on its own. The fact that he had a half inch of extra plating(the ipod) that helped reduce the shock and impact of the bullet which then proceeded through the ipod and hit his vest, makes this completely believable.

I also call BS. The ipod wouldnt matter, there isnt enough resistance in an ipod to slow the bullet any significant amount. What saved him was his body armor, not the ipod. The armor would have stopped the bullet with or without the ipod's help.

Seriously, something that breaks when you drop it isnt going to stop or even slow a bullet.

The difference is that Ipods break at the seams between the plastic faceplate and the aluminum backplate - the backplate doesn't split in half :p
 
umm this is a really old story and im sure its been posted before.
 
Any substance is capable of slowing down anything. This guy would have been wounded or killed if it was not for his body armour, the iPod may have helped a tiny little bit but the armour is the thing that deserves the most credit.
 
The only thing different is that he lost the ipod. it did not save his life. Mine fell off a table and broke ffs.

Dolt! You'd have enough spare pouches in your webbing that would hold it safely, without causing the rifleman distress or inhibiting his functioning as a soldier. Obviously the rifleman wouldn't wear it on a patrol (ie: need all senses tuned in), but maybe just on the hops in and out of patrol zones?
 
You know, if you wanted personal safety, you should carry LG phones.



Blocks every damn thing, and I tried burning it once.
