Ipod thread from 2001

I still can't believe this! All this hype for something so ridiculous! Who cares about an MP3 player? I want something new! I want them to think differently!

I lol'd.

Yeah, who cares about an MP3 which single handedly got Apple out of a hole they dug themselves into and gave them the financial backing to start advertising their Macs.

I think it's funny how they say they wont sell. Bullshit!

If the ipod is only the world's most baddass MP3 player then I don't know if I'm really going to stand in line to buy it, I have a cd walkman and a burner already, and besides that now that I don't have a dotcom job anymore I need that $400 to pay car payments and rent.

Lol, who uses cd players anymore?

Thing is, the ipod is rubbish. Always has been.

Total case of people opting for style over substance.

Haven't had any huge problems with my Nano.
I've had it for about 2 1/2 years now.

I've had my $400 (at the time) 3G iPod for coming up on three years, with zero trouble. I replaced the battery for $16 off of ebay a month or so ago, and it has worked like a dream ever since. Even before I replaced the battery, it was still viable, but it just went dead relatively quickly.

It's funny how that, when the news broke out about the first iPod, Apple's share price went down $1.00, hovering around $19.00. Now, almost 6 years later, the price of an Apple share is $126.00

Anyone have a time machine handy?

See the thing is, people say that, but it's not true. The iPod is a great little MP3 player.

apple hasnt been in a financial hole since the earrly 90's ..since the return of steve jobs they've steadily turned a huge profit year after year (so much so that Jobs salary when returning to apple was $1, yes 1 dollar a year ..however he had controlling shares of stocks meaning return much much higher than a salary could ever pay ..apple went from 3% of the pc market to 5% which on paper doesnt look like much but is ..apple sells the entire thing, microsoft only sells the OS and licensing ...also apple owns 75% of the mp3 market plus their extremely lucrative itunes music store

love or hate them there's no denying apple is innovative and has tons of business smarts

People say that just to jump on the iPod-hating bandwagon, but the truth is, the reason it is so successful is because it is actually great.

That doesn't have to be true. It could be great to the common user. Who may not know about all these technical aspects. This is compounded when the people have never tried anything better so they aren't even aware there is something better.

For example the iPod headphones suck an incredible amount of ass. Yet 99 percent of ipod users use them. They aren't even close to being aware of how much they suck because they've never really used good headphones, or perhaps cba to buy better ones.

So no, the iPod sure is good but the fact that everyone uses it does not automatically mean it's a "great" player. Apple's advertising and the fact that people like to buy whatever is the most popular helped to make the iPod number 1 in sales.

I'll admit, I'd rather have the Zen Vision M instead of the iPod any day of the week...Just because it's the biggest doesn't make it the best, look at Counter-Strike :O

no that's not true ..there were no other mp3 players hitting the market at the time ..apple built up market share because people recognised a good product when they saw it ..other companies just try to emulate their business model but no one can come close because unlike creative or any other mp3 maker they control everything, from the way you get your music to the OS and app you use to run it on ..apple doesnt JUST sell hardware, they sell a lifestyle, as much as BMW does or volvo or rolex or whatever. Creative can throw in features up the wazoo that compete or are better than than what the ipods offer however they've already lost the battle for the hearts and minds of consumers because apple already has it ..I mean it's called "pod" casting not Muvo casting or Zune casting ..ipod is already synonomous with portable mp3 players

That's exactly what I meant in my post. The common user isn't an expert with computers and needs the easiest possible way to put their music on the player. Advanced users like us don't need software that is meant to work perfectly for a specific player, and an entire lifestyle just to have an mp3 player. It's great for a common user but when you've become more experienced, all that matters is the core specs of a player.

I like having a player I don't have to mess around with, I just want to plug it in, copy music, pick the playlist I want, and go, no dicking around with anything. No MP3 player I've used is as straight forward and easy to use as the iPod. It's not a matter of not knowing how to use the other players, it's the fact that I can't be arsed to mess with stuff, I just want to listen to music.

Same reason why I prefer windows over linux.

While I don't necessarily agree with everything you said, I do agree the iPod headphones are utter trash. I used mine until they broke, and to be honest I wanted a new pair just like them (hey, they're white!) because there were no other white ones on the market. I settled for a cheaper, but better sounding, black pair.

Then I managed to a different white pair, which were still miles ahead of the iPod headphones. Then those broke, and I'm currently using very good white, sony headphones.

However, I've used many different mp3 players, and I am still an iPod lover. The interface is just so smooth with the iPod. Using my sister's Creative Zen (not really in the same class as an iPod really, but my point still stands), the interface makes me want to vomit; it's just not even in the same league as the iPod.

Also, despite the common iTunes hate, it isn't a terrible software package. It does what I need it to do, and that is transfer music to my iPod.

at work ( retail sales)

customers come in i want an ipod

They dont know that there are ipods and then other mp3 players, That is the hold Apple have

= Apple wins

Its not the customers fault nobody else advertises except Apple...

The only reason people hate iPods is because they're popular, and people think it's cool to go against the mainstream and hate what everyone else likes. I love my iPod Nano, and it has worked better than any other MP3-player I've tried.

apple doesnt need to advertise but when they do it's leaps and bounds ahead of the competition ..they consistenly win advertising awards ..the pc world markets towards geeks so they have no real use for innovative advertising ...besides the other mp3 players are bit players in a sea of apple ipods ..unless they have huge revenue there's no way they'll be able to penetrate the ipod market ..pretty mcuh why Zune was dead before release ..they just dont have the marketing/design resources that apple has in spades

iRiver > iPod

<3 my ?120 4GB Clix. It sounds sooooo good!

Gotta wonder who the crap thought "iRiver" would be a good name though...

lmao @ the ipod "lifestle" comment stern. lmao.

Its true what baron says. Its just that people dont know there are other mp3 players out there. My parents still call every mp3 player an "iPod." People only buy it because its the only name they hear. If you tell people about your creative Zen Vision, they just look at you wierd. And it only sometimes helps if you tell them its a mp3 player.

When I worked at compusa, a lot of the people came in for ipods, and didnt even understand the concept of an mp3 player. There was no such thing as an mp3 player to them, because as far as they knew, the only music player that existed was the ipod.

I remember seeing this linked from the XKCD blog, very amusing stuff.

Exactly. It's all about the label and how popular it is. Hence why it's normally dumbasses that own one.

ipod never got my atention

and people buy it for pop factor

I've had Sony and Sennheiser headphones (in the 25 euro range) and the ones that come with the iPod are *way* better. Sure there's better ones, but I'm not gonna spend 100 bucks on them. Although the latest generation shipped with new headphones, I don't like their new shape as much as the old one, doesn't fit your ear as well tbh.

And the iPod is simply a good player. I can't stand all these people who make dumbass claims that it's "garbage", hyperbole much? Am I gonna claim it's better than the competition or blows it away? Nah, but it's easily as good as the competition, better in some aspects, worse in others. I'm happy with my 5.5G.

This whole anti-Apple/iPod crowd is just as bad as the Apple circlejerkers.

I got an iPod cause it was the easy choice. I knew people with them, they had no complaints, and I just wanted something that played music and was fairly easy to manage. Don't ask me why I got the video one though...

My only complaint would be that they don't come with some sort of in-built GPS tracking device. Which is to say I lost mine -_-

I get so tired of explaining what a Zen Vision:M is, I just say, "It's like an iPod video." iPod is just a household name now which is why it's so successful. That and the amazing amount of iPod ads as if they really need to advertise. People just don't know there are better things out there.

And about the simplicity of the iPod, it's more hassle than the ZVM. The ZVM supports so many more video formats than any other player thus avoiding any converting you would need to do with the iPod. Also, I just hook up my ZVM to my PC and Windows Media Player automatically syncs the library; if I deleted one song from my WMP library, it removes it from the ZVM as well. Simple? I think so.

I honestly don't use the video function at all - except to watch old Strongbad, cause that's just awesome for some reason. My one real complaint would be that iTunes kind of sucks when you have multiple people using the same computer to sync their pods. Four of the five people in my family have iPods now (household name you said?), and every now and again the wrong library will load for some reason and replace someone else's songs with mum's ^_^;;

If I bought an mp3 player I would probably get an Ipod. But when I see all the glazed looks on the bus as people shut themselves out of the world they are in I remember that I don't want an mp3 player.

May I ask what you do on the bus?
