This is mere speculation at this point but do you think the growing issues with Iran and US relations regarding the pursuit of nuclear arms could have been a key reason why Obama pushed 30,000 more troops to Afghanistan?? I mean at a time when the region is at constant war, you'd think that be the most opportune moment to act as a President. You have Iran getting all red in the face whenever we tie one of their hands behind their back and the Afghan people may or may not want us in the area that much longer so really what are your thoughts on this matter??

I feel as those the entire region will explode into WW3 but thats only a guess. I just seems like the shit hit the fan in the past couple of months and we're finally noticing the powder keg ready to ignite

If that was the key reason why obama sent more troops, wouldn't he of sent more then 30,000? wouldn't he of sent 40,000 or more?

The US isn't going to do anything to iran. The troop increase is for Afghanistan, it has nothing to do with iran.

USA is supossed to have some troubles and needs more troops against the taliban and such cuz you know if they dont the taliban might beat them and fail the whole thing so obviusly sending more troop to reinforce them, cuz you know soldiers are dying and they dont respawn like in call of duty

so you have now invented a new conspiracy teory and you will see how people will talk about how the usa is making a "agression" to iran by sending troops to afganistan cuz yeah the soldiers are there just for the oil

well i just have a feeling that sending more US troops to the region will just anger Iran much more. its something that also needs to be dealt with but I think Obama feels its safest to just ignore them for now

Israel will most likely start an attack on Iran pretty soon, and I think the US might back them.

If the US was going to start a war with Iran, I doubt that 30,000 troops could do the job. I'd send a few aircraft carriers and hundreds of thousands of troops.

Oh afganistan would be so easily won if only it was intended to be won.

Iraq shouldn't have happened...all troops should be sent to Afganistan, in the early years people with peace keeping experiences should have played a major role in the rebuilding.
But of course...the Bush administration didn't really want to win Afganistan nor did they care too much.

9 years of extremely bad management is really hard to undo in such a small time frame. I give to Obama at least that much.

For Israel to bomb Iran they need to fly over Iraq, presently under the control of the US military. Even Bush and Cheney and the rest of the Neocon top brass wouldn't grant them flight access back in 2007/2008, so the odds of Obama giving them permission is fairly unlikely. Also Iran as a nation is over 70 million people (more than double the population or Iraq, or Afganistan), and they aren't a backward country. Starting a war with a nation that large given the US military are already engaged in 2 other territories hardly makes much sense. Esp for someone whose looking to be re-elected in 3 years time.

Given 10% of the US is presently unemployed I'd say the priority at present for Obama is getting the US back on it's feet, not kowtowing to the ludicrous demands of the Cluster**** know as the State of Israel and their ultra-right wing ways.

Iranians are Persians, not Arabs. Sure they don't like what's going on in Israel, but then again nor do a lot of people, but that's principally because it's wrong on a number of levels, not because Palestinians are Muslims and feel some kinship. Fact of the matter is Israel is led by a bunch of people who believe that land they have captured 'belongs' to them as a people because of religious right. Frankly unless you are Jewish they don't even regard you as human, therefore it's entirely acceptable to lie to you, to deceive you, to deny you human rights and to kill you if necessary if it's another step forward in helping them as a people secure this land that God gave to them according to the Torah. It is fairly ludicrous when you think about it, but unfortunately a currency that is all too real.

The Israeli government make declarations about not building any more settlements in the occupied territories, yet they continue to bulldoze down Palestinian homes (because the Palestinians don't have permits they can't obtain) and then make declarations about building more settlements, to universal condemnation by world politicians, whom they then either label as anti-Semitic, or say should stay out of Israeli affairs.

Now clearly not all Israelis think that way, but unfortunately those in charge do, and unfortunately the US government has continually backed them up despite some frankly horrific incidents (the carpet bombing of Lebanon & Palestine being recent examples), that fall well outside the line of acceptable behaviour by what purports to be a 1st world country.

I think Obama realises that the only way Afghanistan is going to be resolved any time soon is with a surge of some kind. Estimates put Al Qaeda's numbers at about 10,000 or so. If they can take out a few key figures (including the new head honcho) then the sooner they can get out of there.

If there are ulterior motives for sending more troops to Afghanistan, it is Pakistan, not Iran. The unstable situation there is a far bigger threat to international security than Ahmedinejad and his bearded buddies. Pakistan does have the nuclear bomb and so does its neighbour India, with whom it doesn't have a very good relationship. If Taliban-like forces take over power in Pakistan, serious quantities of feces will be heading towards the fan.

Plus Israel won't bomb Iran. Like Kad said, it would be neigh impossible for the Israeli air force to fly to Isfahan or any other Iranian location that has reactors. Osirak was a long time ago; they won't pull something like that off again, especially with so many eyes watching them.

I might be wrong, but I though Al Qaeda numbers in Afghanistan are actually 100 or more. I think it is the Taliban who have in excess of 10,000 members.
