Sauce.

Iran has charged three detained U.S. citizens with espionage, the official IRNA news agency quoted a prosecutor as saying on Monday, but Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said there was no evidence to back the charges.

The three, Shane Bauer, 27, Sarah Shourd, 31, and Josh Fattal, 27, were held after they crossed into Iran from northern Iraq at the end of July. Their families said they strayed across the border accidentally. "The three are charged with espionage," Tehran general prosecutor Abbas Jafari Dolatabadi told IRNA. "Investigations continue into the three detained Americans in Iran."

"We believe strongly that there is no evidence to support any charge whatsoever," Clinton said in Berlin on Monday.

"And we would renew our request on behalf of these three young people and their families that the Iranian government exercise compassion and release them so they can return home, and we will continue to make that case," she added.
Rather than declaring their innocence she says that there's "no evidence". Perhaps I'm reading too much into this, but it's an interesting choice of words imo.

She is a politician. You can't take anything they say at face value. And this is also a very delicate situation.

I think they will eventually be released.

But if Iran convicts (an executes them) them and there were innocent, things will get very nasty very quickly.

if they were spies... well our gov will try to hide that fact and try to sweep the whole thing under the rug.

They got caught, some spies.

I bet the Iranians were confused when they saw clones of themselves coming over the hill. This is why you always disguise yourself as someone YOU WON'T MEET.

Or maybe the spies went and shot up an airport to maintain their cover.

Yeah I'm making a joke about Modern Warfare, big whoop, wanna fide about it?

This is probably just another incident Iranians want to create to distract the international community over their nuclear program.

Wow really? And here was me trying to read between the lines thanks for letting me know not to take it at face value

On the other hand though, why would three Americans go hiking in Iran?

You'd think on the off chance that they were spies that they'd have to be pretty damn stupid to accidentally meander across the border, though, right?

I honestly wouldn't be to surprised if they were spies...but they are still American citizens and we need to get them out of there.

I think American spies would have stealthier/smarter ways of sneaking into Iran.

U.S. alleges company laundered money for Iran

New York (CNN) -- The federal government is seeking forfeiture of properties belonging to the Alavi Foundation and Assa Corp. -- accused of transferring money to a bank owned by the Iranian government -- including a Manhattan skyscraper and at least three mosques.

Preet Bharara, the U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York, announced Thursday's filing of an amended civil complaint seeking forfeiture of the Alavi Foundation's interest in the 36-story office tower located on Fifth Avenue in Midtown Manhattan.

The building is owned by 650 Fifth Avenue Company, a partnership between the Alavi Foundation and Assa Corp., the Justice Department said in a news release. The amended complaint alleges that the Alavi Foundation provided services to the Iranian government and transferred money from 650 Fifth Avenue Company to Bank Melli, which is owned and controlled by the government of Iran.

The amended complaint seeks forfeiture of all assets of the Alavi Foundation and Assa Corp., including bank accounts owned by 650 Fifth Avenue Company, the Alavi Foundation and Assa Corp.; and properties owned by the foundation in New York, Maryland, Virginia, Texas and California.

It alleges that the properties were "involved in and [were] the proceeds of money laundering offenses," and that the owners violated the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, executive orders and U.S. Department of Treasury regulations.

Bullshit. If spies get caught let em rot in prison. Would the US ever release caught Iranian spies?

If they were journalists then the US should push for their release or extradition, fine. If they were spies then they can take their just desserts.
