Hopes have risen for an Iranian teenager sentenced to death for stabbing a would-be rapist, after a panel of Islamic judges declared on the first day of her retrial that she had not committed intentional murder.

The case of Nazanin Fatehi, highlighted in The Independent on Sunday last week, has caused an international outcry. She was sentenced to be hanged a year ago, but a retrial was ordered by Ayatollah Mahmoud Shahroudi, head of Iran's religious judiciary, after an Iranian-born singer and former Miss Canada, Nazanin Afshin-Jam, gained more than 300,000 signatories to a petition.

Nazanin Fatehi was 17 when she and her niece, 15, were attacked by three men in a park in Karaj, a town an hour's drive west of Tehran. She stabbed one of the men in the hand and another, who died, in the chest. A third man escaped unharmed. "I wanted to defend myself and my niece," she said at her first trial, when she appeared in court crying, wearing a prison-issue floral chador. "I did not want to kill that boy ... I did not know what to do, because no one came to help us."

Well, it's really good news she won't be killed for protecting herself and her niece at least....that was one upsetting story.

I'm doubtfull too, but the fact that she isn't dead yet is quite a relief in the whole thing for the time being.

that'll teach her to stop acting without the permission of her man...?

Societies like that are... strange... I mean, if a woman can't (or isn't allowed to) defend herself then what's to stop the men from doing whatever they want?! It's retarded... Good to know that she has avoided death thus far.

UN invasionszzz!!!!!1111elevenone!!11

Sorry. But it's good to know she's fine...for now.

This is a step in the right direction for Iran. Remember they are not as advanced culturally as the rest of us.

EDIT: Ooops, nvm read that wrong.

Thats shit. Sparing death for defending oneself?

Here's hoping they acquit her.

Now all we need is another Nat Turner to get banned :p

The prosecutor and the dead man's family have requested the death penalty under qisas, a category of Islamic law that demands equal punishment for a crime.

Oh religion, what won't you intervene with!

I'm loving the posts from US residents. Hardly a country that can sit on a high horse when it comes to civil rights.

Thats not what I'm saying. Its not like you can stab somebody and simply "get freed". No doubt she'll be found innocent in trial, but you can't simply stab people and walk :p
(Note: in no way am I defending this stone-age justice system or the previous verdict in this case)

You're joking, right? If this took place in America (at least, Northern America) she would be found innocent in a snap.

She'd probably be interviewed by a lot of people and hailed as a hero. I don't think any country, be it Iran or the US, that looks positively upon rape. The issue stems from the fact that she is considered a second or even third rate citizen in her country who killed a first rate citizen.

The sad thing is, is that she's not even being let free because she was defending herself, but because she didn't mean to kill him :|

So noone has really come to their senses.

hope she gets freed. although I'll admit I'm doubtful.
That's ridiculous. Even in a western country I think there's an extremely good chance she'd still get something for manslaughter.

And don't anybody say something like "a slap on the back"... You know what I mean.

So that means she produced 5 witnesses? She was lucky. Under Sharia law, a woman has to have 5 witnesses supporting her claim if she was raped. If she can't, she's killed.

Mass international protest got some Ayatollah to call her back to court. SHe lives because of the international protest and media.

...she had not committed intentional murder.
Wtf? This is one of the few times where it's "OK" to kill someone. If someone tries to rape you, you have the right to do anything in your power, including murder, to stop it.

Iran is one ****ed up country.
