This is a movie about Atafeh Sahaaleh who was sentenced to death for crimes against chastity in Iran. She was incorrectly labelled as 22-years-old, which gave the prosecution the legal rights to execute her, when in reality, she was 16. She was sexually abused by a former member of the religious police, who was 53-years-old. Her case was rushed through the judicial system, and she was hung from a crane in the city of Neka. The religious policemen who signed a petition against her were later found guilty of running a child-prostitution ring. To this day the authorities have not admitted any wrongdoing.

Nemesis what's your point? what do you expect out of this thread? Everyone's gonna say "omg those sick sand monkeys" like they always do and some idiot is gonna defend them and it turns into a flamehaus battle that goes on for 5 pages.

Opened again, because closing it for the above reasons defeats the purpose of a discussion forum. :p

Ooo
A supermoderator undermined by a moderator.....

I disagree with locking it though.

horrible ..but what do you expect from laws based on religion? Christianity could have afforded the same sort of severe punishment for preceived crimes ..I mean the bible is chock full of people being put to death for some stupid reason or other ...all it needs is one nut to base state laws on religious doctorine ...it's already in practice in many countries/states: anti-abortion laws, anti-same-sex marriage laws etc

edit: I kinda agree with gunner/comradebadger ...the thread is meant to stir up anti-iranian sentiment ..which is odd because it's obvious that less than a handful of people had any part in the hanging ..surely they dont represent all iranians

Yeah, same thing happened here in the 1700s when we hung a bunch of "witches". As long as there are governments ran by religion these kinds of things are going to continue to happen.

Gunner, I don't see the point of not posting something you feel strongly about because somebody might offend someone else. Lets just close down this entire message board if we are going to start doing that.

sadly she won't be the last killed in the name of religion

Clearly these is only one solution to all this.

We aren't there yet, but if the people living here don't get a ****ing clue give it a few more years and religion will be in our courts and our government (assuming the courts and the government will still be seperate).

That is one scary thought.

I was watching a programme the other night about a group of Athiests in the US and how they often feel outcast and persecuted by the religious majority. I've always know there were more Christians your side of the pond but was quite shocked by how many there were and how much of an affect they had on communities.

I have only ever known one Christian and very rarely bump into anyone of any religious leaning. The thought of bumping into smiling Christians everywhere I went would send me into a cold sweat.

5 pages if we're lucky...the (last) religion thread is over 20 pages by now.

Laws and morality differ from region to region. I find this very distasteful, but still.... their laws....
