personally i think that it's a good thing if iran does eventually acheive nuclear capability. if i was a country i would want it to insure i didn't get invaded! and i think it's outrageous that america is not allowing them to even have nuclear power when theyhave it, as well as the weapons themselves.

The US government does not want any country to become powerful or advance in weapons in anyway. That's the idea that comes to mind. The US wants to be the only country in the world that is allowed to even have nukes or any other advanced weaponry.

The logic in this is, of course, flawed.

Anyway that's the mentallity I've seen over history. Here's one example.

During the 1950's Canada developed something called the Avro Arrow, which at the time was the most advanced fighter aircraft in the world and well ahead of it's time. The aircraft could go Mach 2.5 (which was not reached until the 1970's.) The USA was very scared because if Canada sold the aircraft to America's "Enemies", those countries could walk all over the US. So what happened is, the US asked that the project be shut down. The US also said that if the project were to be shut down, they would protect the whole of North America until 2011 or something like that. Anyway, eventually Canada shut the whole thing down, and all the engineers that built the aircraft moved to the US. Most went to Nasa and helped land the first man on the moon.

Anyways, what my point is, if Canada did not shut down the project and actually went with it and sold the aircraft, the US would be in far worse shape then it is now. The US would not have landed on the moon, would not have developed stealth aircraft and would not have a very advanced military.

Ever since the US has been power hungry, not letting other countries advance themselves militarily.

Edit - And I agree with rambler, those are pretty wild guesses I did see an episode of the history channel with the Avro Arrow, and I may be wrong (or the show might be wrong) but I heard a different story, something along the lines of a new, better aircraft being built. Then again, you may be completely right. I don't know enough about the topic to say for sure.

It is true though, if Canada did sell the Arrow, Canada would have immediatly become a military country as the US is now. It's interesting, but that's how things would have played out.

quite right. what they should do is say they want to resolve their differences with israel thru diplomacy, then claim the diplomacy failed and bomb the crap out of them. that would be the american way

if they have nuclear power they can sell the oil instead of burning it. the price of oil is only going to go up now we're at peak. makes perfect economic sense to have nuclear power
