I was thinking about this topic and the more I thought about it the more it seems that Dog is actually a true artificial intelligence.

My reasons for thinking this is that he frequently disobeys orders given to him, runs off on his own and understands human speech however it is formed not just specific commands.

What's your opnion?

He is an advanced form of Artificial Intelligence, yes. He's not disobeying Alyx, he just has priorities. Protecting Alyx is the first- if he knows something Alyx doesn't, DOG takes a mission upon himself.

In Episode 1, you see he is even capable of problem solving.

What else would DOG be? I can't imagine Scrappy-Doo is hidden underneath that machinery.

I always imagined him as an actual dog's brain in a robot's body. I mean, if your dog died, wouldn't you want to put its brain in a robot? That would be insanely cool.

Hmm, I was thinking the other day, is dog councious? Normally I would say no, but the way he acts, remembers, recognises, etc. implies he is at least partially councious.

Definitely an advanced AI. If you watch Dog and say he doesn't portray dynamic emotions than you haven't been paying attention.

at the baginning of EP1, alyx asks dog if he's done the maths, and he said no. An unadvanced one would HAVE to do the maths.

Dog is like R2-D2 in that he is a character in his own right yet doesn't talk and is a robot.

Maybe DOG just isn't good at math.

If he is a true AI, he's not very smart. He's serving a weaker species after all :|

Hmm... I always assumed he was... He has character. Only a true AI would have character like that.

Those seem like points for him being artificially intelligent to me :\

He has a part of GLaDOS in him.

"THE BEST PART OF WAKING UP, IS GLADOS IN YOUR DOG!"

I thought we were talking about the fictional DOG...

Now I look stupid.

I dunno, I figured it was obvious he was meant to be intelligent in the game so I assumed you were talking about if valve had made a true artificial intelligence :p

But you didn't think that DOG being a scripted character wasn't MORE obvious?

Ok maybe I needed to clarify more.

Conversly, I thought it was obvious that he is not a true artificial intelligence because that isn't even remotely possible yet I was just generally asking for people's opinion on how sophistacated the fictional dog is.

c'mon people AI is extremely sci-fi.

sapience= the ability of a organism to act with judgement.

geez either your underestimating my intelligence or I'm overestimating yours i can't decide which one's sadder.

I believe they said the same thing about crossing the ocean in mere hours, or the Earth being round...

Oh c'mon you don't seriously think that we currently have the capability to creat artificially sentient beings?!

according to Moore's law which has been completely accurate so far the amount of transistors placed inexpensively in an integrated circuit increases roughly every two months. By this standard computer's will reach the processing power of the human brain around 2040.

That's a long fricken time from now, So no, there's no fricken way that anyone has developed AI.

But we're talking about a fictional robot.

Maybe he's just being remotely controlled by Eli or someone. Eli built him after all.

Wait a second...

G-man is Dog. Intuitively obvious.

Pity em new Postmen.

And though dog is a scripted AI, I'm sure you can model manipulate him onto a citizen or something and hed run around and do stuff. Like as an Antlion Guard he might just hit something.

We're talking about the fiction character created from DOG. About whether the processing behind him is AI or not. You started the thread, so you should know.

What he said was contrary to what you said, that AI is too Sci-Fi, thus probably never ever reaching that state. 30 years is not long. Not long at all. If we're going to live to then, then it's practically no time at all. And if we do actually acheive AI in my time, I'd be over the moon.

Personally, I think AI can be coded into the software behind a machine, and it's not really dependant on "transistors", as you put it.
Besides, development is increasing exponentially, and thus the placement of transistors on a board will also exponentially increase.
