is HL2 gonna really be that good?

after reading the 2 semi-recent mags (month old PC Gamer,etc.) that got a chance to sit with HL2 and play some levels, I get the impression that while they liked the game, they weren't so blown away by it that it was ridiculous...
did any of you get that feeling from their articles? I kind of felt like they thought it was great, but nothing earth-shattering...and ofcourse I'm looking at randon pictures that people keep posting on this forum of the leak, and I'm sort of left wondering if the hype is really gonna be a let down...

nah, it's going to suck. VALVe have spent the last 6 years trying to make a really really crap game that'll lose them 30 million.

They only got to play the first 10-20 minutes of the game. It's hard to say how "Great" a game is going to be in that short amount of time.
 
I got the opposite impression, I thought they all seemed the think it was insanely good :/

But anyway, as has been pointed out, they didn't play the whole game, did they?

When the 14% reviews start coming in, thats when I'll start to worry.

And even then I'll still buy the game, because looking at the gameplay in the videos, I fail to see how it could possibly not be the best game of all time :)

[SARCASM]I concur! It will be a horrible game. Everyone will waste their money and Valve will go into hiding with their hoards of money.

Don't buy the game. And don't trust any reviews that will give it +90%. They LIE! They have been bought off by Vavle!

But really. One of the major attractions to HL is the mods. PC gamer didn't get any of those. Plus it'll be a great game instead of a fantastic one. But I'm still gonna get it!

I'll be pissed if it's just a great game.

If it's just a great game, then that means they deleted everything they had up to E32K4 where they clearly had the best game ever seen, and replaced it with something merely "great".

Due to the videos I fully expect it to be the greatest game of all time, and will be disappointed if that is not the case :p
 
Every new game is the greatest of all time... they magazines completely hype them up. Only the month later, the crown is taken by something else.
 
Previews said that Metriod Prime was the biggest mistake - turning it into a FPS...jeez.

It turned out to be one of the best games for the gamecube, and won several GOTY 2002 awards.

So a preview proves nothing.
 
pc gamer and similar mags have traditionally hyped previous titles after playing them to the point where it's ridiculous...mags like that are definitely part of the "hype" machine...so, when they played it, even though it was only 12 minutes of it, I'm thinking they're going to talk about it like it was the second coming christ...but ofcourse they really didn't talk of the game like that...maybe they signed a pda or something so they couldn't interject they're opinions of it in the mag, I don't know...
 
i actually think they're taking half-life 2 a little more seriously. other titles need to be hyped because they were previously unknown and they need to say something about them to sell magazines. the impression that i get from the articles is that they feel that HL2 could easily become one of the best games ever if the final product turns out to be as good as what they played.

Now here's a secret;

I don't actually like the first few chapters of HL that much, but after that the game flies through because you just love it. Having completed it fairly recently i went back to play again and couldn't get past the first chapters because they were all imformative and interesting first time round but second they're just boring.

So if HL2 appears crap to them, i hope its the same sorta thing :)

I have faith in qckbeam and merc's (among others) statements that the game rocks. They've played more than any magazine/site has.
 
Yes, the game will be ****ing awesome and everybody will bow down to it's awesomeness. Bungie will decide to scrap Halo 2 when they see how amazing the game is and a badly written 200 million dollar movie will be made five months later.

Indeed, it will be game of the year.

ok ok i know alot will say "why do people say it is going to be the best game when they haven't played it."

well we have seen Movie clips, which i know the day a movie clip is out weather it is 3am in the morning, we will all be online downloading it!

we are sooo hyper over one new screenshot then talk about the one screenshot like from every angle!

this game is NOT going to dissapoint! even the BBC NEWS web site was talking about it! and news papers! game shows...The lot!

this is going to be the best phsics engine to date! Sooooooo going to be worth the wait!!!!!!
 
It's just a game... By now it seems like you guys expect an orgasm when you open the box... I think you're better off buying a fleshlight or something :p
 
I think it will be a very good game, but don't expect something very special. From what we can see in the videos, the action will be very directive and scripted. The weapons will be very good an funny to use and the ennemies seem to have a good AI.

I think we will get a game where you only have the choice to do what you are supposed to do. And one thing that may turn this into a painfull adventure is the depressive feeling coming out of the ruins of our civilisation in City 17. It's not an optimistic story with not much hope!

In Half-Life 1 we lived an horror story in the strange environment of a futuristic research laboratory with a lot of surprises. In Half-Life 2 we will live a classical fight for freedom in a classical city, but with less surprises as we already saw a lot in HL1.

And for the Source engine we alrady saw many of it's fantastic possibilities in other games like Far Cry, Painkiller, UT2004 and soon Doom3. If the game could have been released last year it would certainly have been a major hit!
 
I also have my douts, I'll keep my fingers crossed and hope that Valve will give us a lot of suprises, I tell you, it has been a long time since I have played a really good game.
 
The reason they didn't write a lot about what they thought of the game is because the article wasn't a review. It wasn't the right time or place to really say what they thought of the game, just to tell what they had seen or know about the game.
 
You know, I was starting to have my doubts from reading this forum all of the time. But then yesterday I watched the E3 videos again and I am still wowed. I don't care what others say, HL2 looks beautiful.. and I'm sure will be tons of fun.

Yeah, it's because it doesn't blow reviewers away anymore. They're playing better games with more wow factor and it's hard to get excited over something that's already been drained of it's wow factor.

It'll probably be an ok game though.

Anyway, Doom 3 is the shiznit!! ****ing 4 more days mofos!! OMG THE WAIT IS KILLING ME.
 
I really hope it will be a good game, 1 year wating for a crappy game? Imagine if its a bad game, damn, Valve will get killed for that.

And to the topic starter: a post called "is HL2 gonna really be that good?" isn't going to get a very good reception in a forum of fans who have faith in the franchise...
 
Its still #1 on my list. The gameplay, action, physics and interactivity all still blow me away! CSS helps too.
 
Ok dude, for 1, half life 2 is gonna be the shizat, ok, period. End of story.
 
Im kinda suprised that alot of you dont have faith in Valve, I think it will be amazing. I was stunned by hl1 when I first played it, the game drew me in and held me like no other. This great game took them only 2 years to make, think about what they have in store for us after 6 years of making hl2. Few games go through such long development cycles, but when they do they always kick ass. this game will be amazing no doubt, Im so stoked.

Yea its kind of like doom3 right now. Alot of people didnt expect much but now as reviews come out and people are getting it they say its alot better than they first thought. Either way hl2 will rock so hard and none of you will be able to deny it!
 
Have some faith in Newell's words. A while back he said they will do everything it takes to make this game really blow our socks off. Do you think he would allow us to be disappointed? How can you allow such thoughts to even PASS through your mind? Thinking Half-Life 2 won't be good. Preposterous!
 
these people are bluffing, they just wan't something to talk about. pfff, pity they dog on half-life 2, they will see. watch something bad is going to happen to them.

i heard that dialoge and wasn't even playing the game and was drawn into it. craving for me.... yes some wow factor is gone. but in the end also long as the experience is as satisfying as hl 1 .. then job done excellent..


however; we have called it as a bluff.. and will wait until the box is in my hands.

nevertheless; doom 3 needs attention over there..
