Well HL2 is a cinematic experience, and Valve's main focus in Ep 1 was the character Alyx, so... Yeah. "Playing" would encompass admiring the characters, or atleast looking at her when she's talking to you, which should be more than enough for you to notice anything.

The smile does look sort of odd. It's hard to pull off with any facial animation system.
