to put portable hard disk in your pocket or hard-pack it into a backpack? Someone told me you should pack it in foam and place in an anti-static bag or else it would spoil very quickly, but I want a second opinion.

External harddisks don't need to be put in an anti-static bag. Only thing that would worry me is dropping it or getting it close to a magnetic coil of some kind.
