I was thinking of updating my computer so that i can play the 2 best games, hopfully being realesed soon, at there best settings, half life 2 and doom 3, but is it worth it

i got a intel pentium 4, 2.4 GHz, 512 MB Ram and a Geforce 4 Ti 4200

and from wat i found looking around that wats needed is a pentium 4, 3.2 ghz, 1Gb Ram, and not sure about this but a anthon graphics card??not sure, so thats like in australian all toghter to update around $700 bucks. i'm no tech at computers but i understand the basics, could sum 1 help us out.

I wouldn't upgrade your CPU, its good enough. You might want to upgrade to a better gfx card and maybe add another 512 meg stick.
The extra ram could be useful, though not necessary, unless you really want to squeeze out the best of the graphics.

Actually you could just read through the tons of threads already posted here.

so 2.4ghz is alright, dont need to touch that, rembering that i wont HL2 on the best settings graphics, visuals ect. shit like that. Im thinking about eithier the radeon 9800, or 9600 pro, also easy to get that extra 512 meg??????

Go over to newegg.com and get 512 MB of RAM. Its not that expensive.

repeating question:::

If you're doubting between the 9800 and the 9600, definately go for the 9800(pro). It's not that expensive anymore and will certainly be a lot faster. The quality of both cards is the same.

so updating the 2.4Ghz to the 3.2 would do nothing for HL2, all i need is graphic's card and the ram??? plz last q

If you're gonna buy a video card you might as well buy one of the brand new cards since the 9800XT/9800PRO can cost as much or more than any of the next-gen cards....makes sense:not really....makes money off stupid people:yep...

A 2.4Ghz is fast enough I'd say. As said, if you really need the best of the best you might want to upgrade but in general you will be able to play HL² on a good res with fancy quality on your current CPU.
You should upgrade your gfx card in order to get the DX9 qualities of the game.
RAM isn't necessary, though it might make the game smoother in large open areas or areas with tons of effects.

I very much agree here, your cpu is fine. Get a 6800GT, make sure you have a total of 1 Gb of PC3200 RAM and get ready to rock.

from the GF4Ti4200 to a 6800GT will be such an upgrade it will blow you away.
