Honestly, I have no clue.

The reason I'm in such a huff about this, is because I've been using this avatar for about 10 years now.

Back when I first got it, and for a couple years afterwards I tried extensively to find the original artist who created it. I could find maybe one or two obscure sites at most that even had the image... and the people who had it didn't know anything about the original artist.

And now, 10 years it's incredibly easy for me to find the image plastered around the internet, including butchered versions such as that in the link in the OP. It's not ubiquitous by any means, but it's certainly easy to find and plastered everywhere, and it depresses me.
