And last I checked, 8.9 = "great". This hardly means they have something against PS2, nor Gran Turismo. It's just the way their scoring system works. If you want their opinion, read the review, they speak pretty highly of it.

EDIT: Just watched the video review. The guy is very positive to the game, although I'm a little disappointed that it seems like Polyphony STILL hasn’t managed to fix the AI on your opponents. I hate in GT3 when you drive like to slow in a curve then an opponent comes and slams into your ass like you didn't exist on the track.

Gamespot are far better than IGN, and gamerankings? The second best game of all time is Metal Gear Solid. On the Gameboy Color. A site that basically serves a ridiculous function; to act as the fanboy's definitive answer for why their game is better than yours. 8.9 is a good score anyway and everything everyone else said. That 8 for Gameplay (rightly) carries more weight than those 9s or 10s - it's a game and therefore, should the gameplay be sub 9, it can drag the score below 9. Not that if anyone loads up the game they're really going to go "well, this game is a full 0.1 below my expectations for a full 9 game".

Gamespot and IGN both suck in terms of reviews, Gamespot moreso. They gave MGS3, my personal favorite game, an 8.7. Even their own review doesn't support that score, it's just ridiculous. They have the most lopsided rating system when it comes to certain games, yet they've scored some real pieces of shit very highly.

In my opinion a rating of 10 is a perfect game, and a 9.5 is a near perfect game. From what I have heard gt4 is far from perfect, but 8.9 is not a bad score.

So, they're terrible because their opinion differs to yours? At least they're honest, unlike some websites and magazines that tend to hype the hell out of certain titles. And how is a 9.2 score wrong? Is it innacurrate of what the reviewer thought of the game? Because that's what the score is for, not to reflect the majority's opinion or your opinion, but the reviewer's opinion.

I used to know If a game got less than a 9 I knew I wouldn't like it very much. So I used to buy all the games that got a 9 rating

I don't read reviews anymore, I know when a game is going to suck by analyzing the following things.

1) Screen shots
2) the developer and the developers past projects
3) whether it is my kind of game
4) whether my shit stunk that day
5) friends and forums like this one

for example I don't care if they rate super mario kart 64 ultra hyper bananna toss racing a score of 10, to me, I know I will not like it at all.

they can rate Gran Tourismo 4 a 8.9 but to me it's going to be higher, becuase of my system

1) I saw pics
2) the developers past projects got 10 or close to it in my book
3) its a racing game. Im a fan
4) my shit stunk
5) .....

another thing that is not right about game ratings is:
GT1 got a better score than GT2 becuase it was earlier in the systems life, and it was a brand new idea and game engine

GT3 got a better score than GT4 for the same reasons
I didn't expect Way better graphics and game play, I expected improvements in every way, so I am happy becuase it has them

\so basically what I'm saying is take game ratings with a grain of salt, as a general guide.

The score isn't an average, it's calculated in another way. The same system is also used for reader reviews when inputting the score; it puts more emphasis on gameplay and reviewer's tilt (one point in those categories counts for .3 in the score); then graphics and value (.2), and finally sound (.1). It's simply the way their scoring system works; it doesn't mean gamespot have an agenda against PS2.

I wonder; if the game got a 9.0, would you still be as annoyed (it would have been feasible; one extra point on "sound" would have done it)?
