What do you guys think? is steam worth downloading? Should i get it?

Pretty much only if you want to play CS 1.6 and DL HL2 media.

Well now that HL2 videos are out it makes no sense NOT to download it.

We have a steam forum, you know...Anyway I vote yes, the videos are great.

yeah, the videos are great, but i'm downloading them with my gamespot subscription over at gamespot almost immediately after they're released on steam

You don't really need to get Steam to get the Direct-feed videos.
Go to fileplanet or something and dl them there. ( Might have to wait a few minutes ).

Steam runs fast for 56kers round uh... 56k :cheese: I get about 1 Mbit and 2 Mbits and I never get that kind of speed anywhere else. So in other words, its fast as hell.

guy...its what a 2 meg download?,..you could have had it by the time the first reply was made and tried it out already

Steam is instrusive malware. slows up load times and does not tell you what it's doing.

Yea, I think Steam is worth downloading, you can talk shit directly to me and other HL.net regulars :p

exactly. imo its not worth the download... get the hl2 media from gamershell or fileplanet. Might take a hour more.. but i dont mind.

Just get the media from 3dgamers.com.... no wait and great servers.... but you should probably give Steam a try and see what YOU think of it. I somewhat agree with Koldfire.... but thats me.

Actually Steam has been pretty good lately. I don't think it crashed in a week or so.

Steam sucks.
I already expressed what I feel about that hidden 400 meg file it puts on your system for no apparent reason - I'm sorry, but downloading a 400+ meg program for a couple of movies is just dumb. Unless you play CS1.6, don't get Steam. The movies are avaliable on every site virtually minutes after they get released on Steam, so that's not worth it.

The 400mb file is just space pre-allocation for the movies, it's going to get filled up as they're released, it hasn't actually downloaded that much yet.

Koldfire:

Steam does tell you what it is doing, check the monitor, and you can disable it loading on startup by going to Steam->Settings->Interface

Steam has never crashed for me. I get 350k+ downloads when I usually get around 50k

Uh, you're not downloading a 400 MB anything. That's just the space it reserves on your HD. The file is empty until it gets filled up with movies. At today's prices, 400 MB of hard drive space is worth about 40 cents.

It doesn't matter whether I downloaded the file or not: the FACT is, that Steam takes up WAY more room than it should. I don't play any MP games, I only wanted to use Steam for the movies, so why should the program take up so much damn space?

Like I said in an earlier thread, I don't actually care about the 400 megs (though my HD sure isn't large) - it's the thing that Valve should've notified you when you're installing Steam that 'OK, we're going to use 400 megs of extra space as cache', and I wouldv'e been fine with that. I wouldv'e cancelled the installation, sure, but I wouldn't get pissed off.
