Running a slightly dated, but still quite respectable graphics card, would I get a huge performance increase from upgrading from the AMD Athlon (Barton) 3000+ to something like an AMD Athlon64 3000 S939 Winchester?

I'm not likely to do this - I'll wait a shade longer and then look at the nForce4 and PCI-E offerings and then have to upgraade the graphics card at the same time... but was just curious if anbody had any clear idea of how their performance had changed if they'd taken the same graphics card from a Athlon32 system to a nForce3 based Athlon64 system?

ouch - yes it does!

3000+ is on the list, but usually getting *nailed* by the AMD64 2500+!

yea there is always like 12 spots in between the xp 3000 and the 64 3000 thats a pretty big difference, the amd 64's tend to be the better preformers.

Athlon 64 Question

CPU:
http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/cpu/print/29cpu-hl2.html

The above link has 3 Winchester CPUs running on an ATI RADEON X800 XT working at 500MHz chip and 1000MHz memory frequency.

GPU:
http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/video/display/half-life.html

This second link should give you an idea of what you would expect from an Athlon 4000+, each running on several different cards:
Testbed 1:

* AMD Athlon 64 4000+ CPU (2.40GHz, 1MB L2 cache);
* ABIT KV8 Pro mainboard;
* OCZ PC-3200 Platinum EB DDR SDRAM (2x512MB, CL2.5-3-2-8);
* Samsung SpinPoint SP1213C HDD (Serial ATA-150, 8MB buffer);
* Creative SoundBlaster Audigy 2 sound card.

Testbed2 is for a P4, if anyone is interested.

the performance difference is considerable.
I went from a 2000XP@2ghz to a amd 64 3200 (newcastle) @2.2ghz.
Ok its socket 754, but thats fine with me, cos I want need to upgrade this cpu for quite a while, and the 3700 fits the board anyways.
But the Multitasking is amazing compared to my other 2000xp.
With my 1gb of corsair xms, I can scan my pc with my anti-virus, anti-trojan programs, run adaware and spybot s & d, play music and surf the net.
The anti virus used to hog the cpu before, and running anything else was impossible.
So I can only guess at the possibilities of a socket 939 dual channel memory and cpu combination, but it should be quite a bit faster than mine.

thanks oni - that's the sort of answer I was looking for... not that yours wasn't good foxy / any others ;)
