Islam - A murderious religion?

This sort of came into my head just now.

Please ignore all terrorism and things like that, I want to talk about the Sharia Law and in particular Christian converts.

Under Sharia Law, if a Muslim decides to convert to any other religion, like Christianity, then the person will be executed for abandoning his religion.

I remember reading this whole case, where an Afghan man converted to Christianity and moved to the UK. Well in Afganistan, he has been put on the death sentence and the Afghans want to extradite this person so they can execute him.

So, If people are executed for abandoning their religion, surely that makes that religion a murderious one?

What are your thoughts? I know this is VERY contrevesial subject, and I dont want to offend anyone.

Well from what i got tought in history class, it was a peacfull and good religion at the start. But when the skism came between the Shiites and the whatever the other was that had different views on weather or not the decendents of muhammad should rule the religion or not, that is were the violent and extreemist stuff started.

For many hundreds of years, whenever pagans or atheists were given the choice to live in either Christian Europe or the Muslim Middle East, they always chose the Islamic empires, because Islam was generally tolerant towards nonbeleivers on a governmental level. They simply made them pay a tax and banned them from government service. In Europe, pagans were demanded to be put to death or converted.

The scism between shiites and sunnis is a deep seeded one, but it is easily comparable to Catholicism vs. Protestantism, which indeed cursed Europe for many years, and only the Englightenment and scientific progress quenched the flames of religious conflict in Europe.

The true solution to our violent religious differences is through education, enlightenment and rational thought. Sure, you sometimes end up with secular dictators, but most secular societies in the world are fairly stable democracies with a happy populace. Theocracy, no matter what the religion, breeds hate, exclusion and violence. Even the puritans were brutal to others who were not like them (witch hunts)...the only theocracy I can think of that did not end in tragedy was the Quaker society, and possibly the Amish.

I never understoond conversions ...if someone stuck a hot iron near my face and threatened to use it if I didnt convert to say judaism for example .. I'd convert so fast my foreskin would leap off out of it's own volition ..no religion is worth hot pokers to the bum

I never though I'd see myself defending Christianity, but here we go:
Are all those from the Old Testament? Because if they are, that would speak more for Judaism than for Christianity. The main message of Christianity isn't to follow old rules, but to follow the example of Jesus. (Although, many who today claim to be Christians are really orthodox Jews, because they spend more time finding quotations in the Old Testament than to read the new.)
